Issy switched to compete for Wales in 2025 and enjoyed a breakthrough season:
“I spoke to Welsh Athletics and my mum, who was born and raised in Porthcawl, and decided to represent Wales. With the support of the team at Welsh Athletics, I've since made a big breakthrough, running 1.57 indoors which is a massive two-second personal best.”
She won the British Indoor 800m Champion title this year and reached the semi-finals of the World Indoors. And is now gearing up to making her debut at the Commonwealth Games:
“It is such an honour to be selected as a part of Team Wales. The support I get from the whole of Welsh Athletics is incredible and they really make me feel like part of the team. Athletics is an individual sport during competition but during the Commonwealth Games it feels so much more like a team sport.”
Her journey in athletics began when she competed at a district school sports competition. She decided to go along to weekly sessions at Lee Valley Athletics Centre. And while she tried all the different events, she knew that running was for her - and that her strengths lay in middle distance.
She was proved right when she claimed her first junior GB vest at 16 years old and went on to win European age group titles for the 800m at under 18, under 20 and under 23.
She struggled with setbacks in 2024 when she pulled her hamstring, just a week before the Olympic trials:
“I feel like I am now back to form and hoping to better my PB outdoors this season and make it to the Commonwealth Games final.”
Away from the track, she studied biomedical science degree at Birmingham University. And her claim to fame? She was an extra in the final Harry Potter movie, appearing on the Hogwarts Express.
