Service Award Winners

As we come to the end of Volunteer Week 2020, we would like to pay a special tribute to the amazing volunteers across the sport that have dedicated so much time and effort over a number of years, without their support, and support of others like them, athletics across Wales would not be able to be delivered to such a high standard.
Today we would like to say “Thank You” to some of our 2019 Service Award* Winners
2019 Award of Honour recipients:
Tony Balmont
Tony first became involved in athletics in 1975. As a level three technical official he has officiated at all levels from grass roots to championship and international events across the whole of Wales.
He received a Meritorious Award in 2007 and has continued to serve our sport ever since.
David Edwards
David has been a member of Wrexham AAC club for over thirty years and has been its Track and Field secretary since 1997. In 2015 he was elected as vice chairman of the club and became club chairman in 2018. He is a qualified development coach, field official and officiates at club, regional, national and international level and travels throughout Wales to support Welsh Athletics events. David also organises the Wrexham Games and many of the Wrexham AAC home fixtures. He received a Meritorious Award in 2008 and continues to give outstanding service to our sport at all levels.
Terry Goodridge
Terry has served Welsh Athletics as a technical official for the past twenty five years. As a long serving member of the start team he is well respected by his fellow officials and the athletes. Ever present at both indoor and outdoor meetings. He attends meetings across the whole of Wales ranging from junior leagues and open competitions to championship and international events. Following receipt of a Meritorious Award in 2009 he received the Award of Honour in in 2019.
Hilary Goodger
Hilary has been a member of Newport Harriers for over thirty years and since becoming a coach has been involved with the club ever since. Hilary has held many roles within the club and the East Region, she is also a qualified Track and Field Official and a race starter who over the years has supported her Club, Region and Welsh Athletics in these roles.
Ken Goodger
Ken has been involved with Newport Harriers for over thirty years where he has held a number of leadership roles including that of Club secretary. He has also served his Club, Region and Welsh Athletics as a coach and technical official. As a coach, he is passionate about our sport and encourages young athletes to try a range of events. Ken has also served the club as an administrator for league meetings and championship events and has played a key role in the organization of events and fixtures over the years.
Denise Harris
Denise has served her Club, Region and Welsh Athletics with distinction as an administrator, coach and technical official and her commitment to the development of field events in North Wales. A long serving member of the Deeside AAC she has held many positions including that of club secretary and also serving as the North Wales Regional Officials secretary where she was proactive in recruiting new officials, arranging training courses for officials and mentoring a number of officials to move through the various levels. Within her club she applied herself to coaching a number of field events but was well known in athletics circles as a specialist pole vault coach. In addition, she has been actively involved as a committee member playing an active role in her club, the North Wales Regional Council and Welsh Athletics Officials Committee. She received a Meritorious Award in 2007 and subsequently the Welsh Athletics Award of Honour in 2019.
Bernie Jones
Bernie has been a member of the Wrexham club since 1970 and has been the club Cross Country secretary since 2003. In recognition of his services to the club he was made a Life Member of the club in 2009. Bernie and has been a member of the Welsh Masters Cross Country Team and has also managed the team for a number of years. His forty years of service and dedication to the sport makes saw him receive the Welsh Athletics Award of Honour in 2019.
Adrian Thomas
Adrian has vast experience in athletics having been a volunteer coach for nearly fifty years. During this time he has coached athletes to numerous major championships including Olympians Daniel Caines and Rhys Williams. He has also been head coach for British 4x400m relay squads and supported the British team at multiple European, World and Olympic Championships. Adrian has also been a member of the Welsh Athletics coaching staff at the 1998 and 2006 Commonwealth Games. His recent activities include being a member of the Welsh Athletics Board and chairing the Welsh Athletics Performance Task Group.
2019 Meritorious Award recipients:
Delyth Brown
Delyth has been a member of Carmarthen and District Harriers for over forty years. During the past twenty years she has coached athletes at Carmarthen ranging from grass roots to international level.
She has served as team manager and team coach to numerous Welsh Schools and Welsh Athletics teams at Cross Country, Fell, Mountain and Road Running as well as Track and Field competitions. Delyth is an excellent coach and team manager who has given so much to benefit athletes in her club, region and country and was recognized in 2019 via the Service Awards programme.
Kay Chapman.
Kay joined Cardiff AAC over 30 years ago as an athlete and continues to compete to a high level. After a short break from athletics, Kay returned to Cardiff AAC in 2007 to support her children and subsequently used her extensive knowledge and experience of the sport to manage junior league teams in Track and Field and Cross Country. Kay has represented the club on the South Wales Regional Council and has been team manager to South Wales Regional teams for Track and Field, Cross Country and Mountain Running. She was also part of a club committee that initiated the development of the Cardiff Academy and has been proactive in recruiting new athletes which has increased the number of young athletes representing the club in endurance events and provides support for the families of new athletes.
She is also a qualified official and race adjudicator who can regularly be seen at events throughout Wales.
