Team Announcement: European Championships

In a summer where three major championships are taking place, the third and final championship of the summer begins on August 15th. To be held in Munich, Germany, this years European Championships sees one of the largest British Teams to be ever taken to a championships.
Welsh Athletics have 8 athletes making their way over to Munich, competing in events from 100m all the way up to the marathon.
British 100m Champion Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff) had a strong showing at this years Commonwealth Games, finish an impressive 5th place in the 100m final and will hope to build on this form going into the European Championships. Entered to compete in both the 100m and the 4x100m, Jeremiah’s competition will begin on August 15th with the 100m heats.
Olympian Joe Brier (Swansea) goes over the individuals 400m for the first time at this years European Championships, as well as the 4x400m. Having competed at the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games already this season, Joe kicks off his Championships on August 15th.
Over the metric mile, Melissa Courtney Bryant (Poole) will make it 3 out of 3 Championships this summer. After making the Commonwealth Games final and finishing in 10th, Melissa will be looking to make the final of the 1500m. Her first round will take place on August 16th.
Joining Melissa and competing over the 1500m is Olympian Jake Heyward (Cardiff). The Welsh 1,500m record holder had the fastest race of his life at the Commonwealth Games, running a time of 3:31.08 to finish in 5th place. He will be looking to use his current form to challenge for the medals at this years Championships. His first round will begin on August 15th.
Rosie Edwards (Rotherham) makes her Great Britain debut over the Marathon. Based out in America, the 2:31:56 marathon runners been preparing for the Championships with a recent 72:45 half marathon. Her race kicks off on August 15th.
Joining Rosie on the roads of Munich will be Andrew Davies (Stockport). The ever improving and record breaking veteran continues to break his personal bests, setting a new marathon PB earlier this year of 2:14:20 in Seville. He also races on August 15th.
After setting a British Record over the 10,000m Race Walk, Heather Lewis (Pembroke) will be doubling the distance and taking to 20km event. Coming into this race in arguably the best shape of her life, Heather will be looking to feature near the front. Her race will take place on August 16th.
Tackling the 35km Race Walk distance, Bethan Davies (Cardiff) will also be taking to the roads. The British Record holder for this event will be looking to use her current fitness to compete of the medals in what is potentially her best event. Bethan will also compete on August 16th.
The team will also be supported by Adam Rattenberry (Therapist) and Team Coaches Chris Jones and Ryan Spencer-Jones.
Olympic Head Coach, Christian Malcolm said, “After a very successful World Athletics Championships for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team where we finished as the top European country in the placings table, we are really pleased to be taking such a strong team to Munich and giving a number of athletes a key development opportunity on the major stage.
“Several world medallists and finalists have been selected, while many others have stepped up this summer and are earning their first GB & NI vest on the European stage. This is one of the largest squads we have ever taken to a European Championships, and we are really looking forward to taking on the best on the continent next month.”
