New Year Performance Round Up

A number of Welsh athletes were in action over the festive period, with many competing at the traditional annual road racing fixtures both on home soil and overseas.
Glynneath Boxing Day 5 Mile Race – Glynneath – Wednesday 26th December 2018
An elite field gathered at the Glynneath 5 Mile Road Race on Boxing Day, as Swansea’s Kris Jones and Cardiff’s Clara Evans took victory in the men’s and women’s races respectively. In the men’s race, Jones was victorious in 23:46 ahead of Commonwealth Half Marathon and Swansea teammate Jonny Hopkins (24:10), with Cardiff’s Rowan Axe finishing third (25:23). In the women’s race, Evans ran to victory in a time of 28:34, ahead of Cardiff teammate Lucy Marland (28:58) with Parc Bryn Bach’s Lauren Williams finishing third (29:08).

Old Father Time Vets 5 Mile Race – Cardiff – 30th December 2018
Simon Lewis (Pontypridd Roadents) and Niki Morgan (Chepstow Harriers) were respective winners at the Old Father Time Vets 5 Mile race on Sunday. Lewis crossed the line in 26:13 ahead of Tim Iveson (Builth; 26:28) and James Thie (Cardiff; 26:34). Morgan was first woman across the line in 31:33 ahead of Katie Beecher (Les Croupiers; 32:19) and Helen Marie-Davies (Swansea; 32:50).

Nos Galan Road Races 2018 – Mountain Ash – 31st December 2018
Kris Jones and Jenny Nesbitt took victory in the Elite Races on the 60th anniversary of the Nos Galan Races. The world-renowned New Year’s Eve 5k road race, which takes place on the iconic Mountain Ash course annually, was attended by Paralympian Rhys Jones and legendary British distance runner Dave Bedford along with Welsh rugby star Sam Warburton on an action-packed evening of racing.
The men’s race was dominated by Swansea’s Kris Jones, who ran to victory in a blistering 14:19, 30 seconds ahead of second placed Ieuan Thomas (Cardiff AAC; 14:49) and third placed Dan Nash (Cardiff AAC; 14:55). Meanwhile, the women’s race was won in equally convincing fashion by Jenny Nesbitt (Worcester AC) in 16:31, ahead of second placed Clara Evans (Cardiff AAC; 16:50) and third placed Caryl Jones (Swansea Harriers; 17:17).

Corrida de Houilles 10k Road Race – Houilles, France – Sunday 30th December 2018
Swansea duo Dewi Griffiths and Josh Griffiths both ended the year in style as they ran to excellent performances at the Corrida de Houilles 10k road race in France on Sunday. In a high calibre men’s race, Dewi clocked 28:49 to finish 12th with Josh clocking 29:31 to finish 17th.
BOclassic 5k – Bolzano, Italy – Monday 31st December 2018
Swansea Harrier Elinor Kirk was in action on the roads of Italy on New Year’s Eve as she finished 13th at the BOclassic 5k Road Race in a time of 17:39.
