Sunday’s Coaching Assistants Course at Deeside was a huge success, bringing together enthusiastic candidates for a day packed with learning, laughter, and new experiences, all in glorious sunshine.
With an exciting summer ahead for UK athletics, including two major championships taking place on home soil, developing new coaches has never been more important for us here in Wales. Coaching Assistants play a vital role in helping clubs create welcoming, fun, and inclusive environments where athletes of all ages can enjoy the sport and reach their potential. Courses like this help build the next generation of coaches who will support athletes at every level of the sport.
From the very start, the atmosphere was positive, supportive, and full of energy as coaches explored new ideas, developed practical skills, and gained confidence in delivering athletics sessions.
Tutor Joanna Bohannan Walker summed the day up perfectly: “What a fantastic day of learning in the sunshine! Coaches who bounced ideas off each other, felt safe to explore new ideas. Above all else, having so much fun. No one stopped smiling all day.”
The course gave candidates the opportunity to try a range of athletic events, with many stepping outside their comfort zones and discovering new skills for the very first time. One candidate shared: “I have never thrown a javelin before, it was amazing! I loved it!” Another added: “It was just brilliant, all day. I loved it.” The enthusiasm and enjoyment shown throughout the day highlighted exactly why athletics coaching is so rewarding, creating opportunities, building confidence, and inspiring participation through fun and inclusive sessions.
Following the success of Sunday’s course, we are excited to announce that we will be returning to Deeside at the end of the month to deliver the first part of our Athletics Coach Course. This is the perfect next step for anyone looking to develop their coaching journey further, gain nationally recognised coaching qualifications, and build the skills needed to support and lead athletics sessions confidently. Whether you are newly qualified coaching assistant or looking to build on your experience, the Athletics Coach Course provides practical learning, expert tutor support, and a fantastic opportunity to become part of the athletics coaching community. Places are now available, and we would encourage anyone interested to book early to avoid disappointment Athletics Coach - Deeside (WAAC26.1) .
We can’t wait to return to Deeside for another brilliant weekend of learning and development, with fantastic facilities and an amazing welcome as always.
