Welsh 5KM Masters Championships – Medal Winners

Showcasing the Masters with their own 5km Championships paid dividends at the Welsh 5km Championships with some brilliant racing in both the Men’s and Womens categories and topped off by a superb new Welsh W65 record by Angharad Mair, Les Croupiers Running Club who broke the old record by over 2 minutes with a superb 20-28 on the challenging new Caerphilly course.

James Hansell, San Domenico thought he had the race won and eased down as he came to the line raising his hand in victory but the wily Marc Hobbs used all his experience to nip past James, literally on the line to secure the title. Similarly in the M65 age group, Dave James was passed in the last few strides as local boy John Hickman, Caerphilly Runners, took his first ever Welsh title.

Things were equally tight  in the womens race with a great battle between Rhian Maloney, Mickey Norris Running Team and Donna Morris, Builth & District finishing within 5 seconds of each other and Louise Flynn not being far behind in 18-20. However, the performance of the day goes to Angharad Mair who finished 14^th overall woman in the race and whose time would have been good enough to win a medal in all of the age groups other than the w35 and W40.

NB – There were a small number of athletes who finished in the first three positions who were NOT current paid up members of Welsh Athletics and were therefore not eligible for championship medals
