WELSH SENIOR UNDER-17 AND PARA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS – CARDIFF, JUNE 28 AND 29
The 107th senior championships witnessed hugely successful and exciting weekend of high quality athletics which also featured the Great Britian team trials for the European Under-23 Championships in Norway later this summer.
Among the highlights were World indoor 60m champion Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff Athletics) claim the senior/under-23 men’s 200m Welsh title in a new personal best of 20.83.
While Commonwealth Games 100m gold medallist Olivia Breen (City of Portsmouth) won the female ambulant para long jump with a season’s best 4.75m
There were also all-comers records and championship bests galore as a bumper entry of almost 800 athletes flocked to the Cardiff International Sports Campus.
BAUHAUS JUNIOREN GALA - MANNHEIM – JUNE 28 AND 29
Welsh Athletics National Development Programme sprinters Nell Desir (Cardiff Archers) and Jessica Mantle (Cardiff Athletics) represented Great Britain Under-20 at the prestigious Mannheim Gala in Germany at the weekend.
Desir was part of the Great Britain 4x100m team which clocked a season’s best time of 44.29 to claim victory over Ireland who were second with 44.52 and France 1 third in 44.57 on Saturday.
While on Sunday, Mantle was part of the GB 4x100m team which finished fifth in their race in 45.42. The race was won by Switzerland who pipped hosts Germany to victory.
ENGLAND SCHOOLS ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION SOUTH WEST COMBINED EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS – YEOVIL, JUNE 28 AND 29
Eden Robinson (Cardiff Archers/Welsh Anglo Athletics/Millfield School) achieved a European Under-20 Championships qualifying standard in Yeovil over the weekend.
The World Under-20 Championships fifth placer won the senior girls title at the South West Combined Events Championships with an impressive total of 5,608, which included three personal bests.
The Great Britain team qualifying standard for the European Athletics Under-20 Championships in Finland is 5,400 points.
Robinson made a flying start to the competition notching the first of her PBs in the 100m hurdles where she registered 13.91 for 991 points.
A best of 1.59m in the high jump saw Robinson drop down to second in the overall standings.
But she was soon back in the lead with a new PB of 13.68m in the shot put. A time of 24.79 in the 200m and a distance of 5.77m in the long jump consolidated her place in the gold medal position after five events.
Robinson extended her advantage with a championship best performance of 36.00m in the javelin before rounding off her competition in style by running the 800m in a PB of 2:18.56.
HUNDRED HOUSE 10K – BUILTH WELLS, JUNE 29
Wales Commonwealth Games marathon runner and Great Britain international Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) won the scenic Hundred House 10K on Sunday.
Griffiths claimed the win in 32:18 ahead of Sam Juson (Croft Ambrey RC) in 33:36. Local athlete Eric Apperly (Builth and District Running Club) was third in 37:11.
Another Builth and District Running Club athlete, Donna Morris, won the women’s race and finished eighth overall as she clocked 40:56.
Rachel Bowen (Lliswerry Runners) was second in 48:18 with Kate Williams (Builth and District Running Club) third in 48:46.
UK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE – NORTHERN WEST THREE N SOUTH – SALFORD, JUNE 29
Athletes from Menai Track and Field AC and Wrexham AAC competed at the UK Development League fixture in Salford on Sunday.
Among the highlights were Myla Brockwell (Menai) winning the under-13 girls 75m A race in 10.20, while clubmate Cai Roberts won the under-15 boys A long jump with 5.62m. Wrexham’s Freddie Cunningham won the under-15 boys A high jump with 1.55m.
