DR SANDER SCORCHER INVITATIONAL – NEW YORK, JANUARY 24-25

Running for La Salle University, Welsh Under-20 steeplechase record holder Gwenno Goode (Cardiff Athletics) ran 9:16 as she finished second over 3,000m at the Dr Sander Scorcher event in New York.

WELSH ATHLETICS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – PEMBREY, JANUARY 26

The 120th edition of the Welsh Cross Country Championships attracted an entry of more than 1,100 runners of all ages and abilities.

The senior men’s and women’s titles were taken by Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) and Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach).

Griffiths equalled Welsh marathon legend Steve Jones’ record of nine senior men’s cross country titles as he crossed the line ahead of Thomas Chaston (Belgrave Harriers) in a winning time of 31:31.

Cooper followed up last weekend’s win in the senior women’s 1500m at the Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships by claiming the senior women’s title in 29:05 ahead of Gemma Tutton (Swansea Harriers).

MALAGA INDOOR MATCH ANTEQUERA – WORLD ATHLETICS TOUR CHALLENGER – JANUARY 25

Cari Hughes (Cardiff Athletics) carried her excellent cross country form this winter into her indoor track season.

After representing Great Britain at the European Cross Country Championships in Turkey at the end of last year, Hughes opened her track campaign with a win over 3,000m in Spain, clocking 8:50.40.

The time was an indoor personal best and less than three seconds off the European Indoor Championships qualifying standard.

CARDIFF MET NON THOMAS SPEED GRAND PRIX – CARDIFF – JANUARY 26

There were some noteworthy performances during Sunday’s Non Thomas Speed Grand Prix at the National Indoor Athletics Centre.

Great Britain and Wales international Sam Gordon (Cardiff Athletics) ran the fastest time of the day across the 61 athletes competing in the men’s 60m heats – stopping the clock at 6.73 in the first round.

Alex Azu (Cardiff Athletics), who claimed bronze over 60m at last weekend's Welsh Indoor Championships, registered the second fastest time of the day – 6.83, which is a new personal best.

There was also a new PB for Eniola Adetotun (Swansea University/Swansea Harriers) who clocked 6.86 to take a chunk out of his previous best of 6.94.

Under-17 athlete Finnley Roynon (Cwmbran Harriers) who is on the Welsh Athletics National Development Programme improved his 60m PB for the second weekend running as he dipped under seven seconds for the first time with 6.99 in the second round.

Another NDP athlete, Jessica Mantle (Cardiff Athletics) continued her flying start to the year as she clocked the joint fastest time of the day with Gloucester’s Ella Edwards in the women’s 60m. Having lowered her PB to 7.53 last weekend to win the Welsh Indoor 60m title, Mantle clocked 7.55 on Sunday.

NDPs athlete Aliyah Afolabi (Cardiff Archers) finished second in her heat to Edwards, clocking 7.63, while fellow NDP athlete Tiana Odugbesan (Cardiff Archers) won her heat in the women’s 60m in a new PB of 7.87. Menna Grant (Cardiff Archers), who is also on the development programme clocked a fastest time of 8.85 in the 60m hurdles.

Lachlan Robbie (Cardiff Archers), another on the NDP list, won the men’s shot put competition with a best effort of 14.56m to finish ahead of Dafydd Herdman (Cardiff Athletics) with 11.68m. Cobie Phillips (Cardiff Archers) twice jumped 12.24m in the men’s triple jump.

William Hawker (Swansea Harriers) posted the fastest time in the men’s 200m heats with 22:57 to edge out club mate Marek Warzocha who clocked 22.77.

In the women’s 200m Isabella Wigley (Cardiff Archers) claimed the fastest time of the day and a big new PB of 25.36. There was also sizeable PB for under-20 athlete Elana Murray (Cardiff Athletics) who clocked 25.79.

Toks Akanbi-Mortimer (Cardiff Met) won the men’s invitational long jump with a best of 7.04m ahead of Ryan Edwards (Maldwyn) with 6.59m.

There was a big PB for Welsh Masters V40 athlete Sarah Coote, who clocked the second fastest time of the day in the women’s 300n with 42.77.

BUILTH AND DISTRICT RUNNING CLUB RESOLUTION 5K – BUILTH WELLS, JANUARY 26

The Resolution 5K is run entirely within the Royal Welsh Showground on a mainly flat tarmac course featuring one small hill, which makes it ideal for new and experienced runners alike.

This year’s men’s race was won by Tomas Black (Pontypridd Roadents) who completed the course in 17:01. Next home was Eric Apperley (Builth and District Running Club) in 17:46, followed by club-mate Marcus Bayona-Martinez in 18:55.

The first female finisher was Hannah Thomas (Maldwyn Harriers), who crossed the line in 20:16, with Isabel North (Hereford and County AC) second in 20:56 and Kate Jones (Builth and District Running Club) third in 21:15.

SEVILLA HALF MARATHON – JANUARY 26

Beth Kidger (Brighton Phoenix) ran 72:42 at the third edition of the Sevilla Half Marathon in Spain on Sunday.

MEETING MONIZ PEREIRA – WORLD ATHLETICS TOUR CHALLENGER – POMBAL, PORTUGAL, JANUARY 26

Dewi Hammond (Cardiff Athletics) finished fifth in the men’s 60m in 6.92 at the World Tour Challenger event in Portugal.
