BATTERSEA COMEBACK 5000M – MAY 22

Great Britain international Dafydd James (Swansea Harriers) finished third in the Elite Final at the Battersea Comeback 5,000 in London in 13:49.68.

NAIA OUTDOOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – ASHNEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, MAY 22

Ellen Mary Kearney (Warriors Pentathlon and Athletic Club/Milligan) ran at the front of the pack through the opening laps of the 3,000m steeplechase final before pulling away from the field alongside Elysse Fleming of British Columbia.

The two exchanged the lead through the middle laps, with Fleming gaining separation entering the final two. Kearney dug deep in pursuit and emptied the tank, closing with a personal-best and Milligan school record of 10:24.05 to finish as the national runner-up and earn All-American honours.

Kearney quickly turned around to compete in the women's 800-metre final less than an hour later, delivering a second All-American performance with an eighth-place finish in 2:14.64.

NCAA DIVISION 2 OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS – EMPORIA, KANSAS, MAY 22

Matthew Brunnock (Western Tempo/Wingate) finished 13th in the men’s 1500m at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Kansas.

Owen Roberts (Meirionnydd Running Club) finished third in 14:12, while Under-18 athlete Zac Campbell (Deeside AC) clocked 15:03.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS CLUB CUP – CASTELLON, SPAIN, MAY 23

Welsh record holder Freya Jones (Harrow AC) finished second in the women’s javelin with a best of 54.62m in Spain.

TRAIL DE GUERLEDAN – BRITTANY, MAY 23

Wales continued its strong performances at the Trail De Guerledan with a second place team finish on Saturday.

There were also a number of individual podium places as the Welsh athletes excelled on the 26km course on the trails around the Guerledan Lake.

Jacob Tasker (Bridgend AC) won the men’s race in 2:06.07 with Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) placing third in 2:07.57.

In the women’s race, Eden O’Dea (Deeside AAC) continued her impressive form as she finished second to France’s Laure Bertrand in 2:27.24.

The other Welsh placings were: Bethan Logan (Mynydd Du) seventh, Lucy Williamson (Mynydd Du) 14th and Gwynant Jones (Western Tempo), who was 23rd in the men’s race.

National Development Programme hammer thrower Gethin Brown (Deeside AC) threw a new personal best of 64.91m to extend his UK Under-18 hammer lead in Germany.


NATIONAL ATHLETICS LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP ROUND 1 – DERBY, MAY 23

Swansea Harriers returned to the top flight of the National Athletics League on Saturday following their promotion last season.

Up against some of the biggest and most successful clubs in the United Kingdom, the competition was predictable tough, but there were a number of highlights for the Welsh club.

Fresh from captaining his country at the Loughborough International last weekend, Patrick Swan typically led from the front for Swansea.

The 11-time UK championship medallist earned full points in the shot put, comfortably out-distancing his nearest rival by more than two metres with a winning effort of 17.42m.

There was another excellent win for Swansea in the women’s high jump where Lili Church registered a best of 1.76m to claim the honours.

In the men’s discus, young Welsh Athletics Transition Programme F38 thrower Michael Jenkins also amassed big points for his club as he finished second to Olympian Nick Percy (Harrow AC) with a best of 56.30m.

Eniola Adedotun posted the third fastest men’s 100m time of the day with 10.54, while Sam Davies was fourth in the men’s high jump with a best of 2.09m.

There was also a third placed finish in the women’s discus where National Development Programme thrower Lucy Harris also finished as the top Under-23 athlete with 45.23m.

Other Welsh athletes competing included Transition Programme long jumper Jessica Lee (Harrow AC), who won the women’s compeition with a best leap of 6.12m.

In the women’s hammer, National Development Programme athlete Amelia Fettis (Thames Valley Harriers) was the top placed Under-23 athlete with 57.44m.

Swansea finished seventh out of eight in the overall match with 382 points. Thames Valley Harriers led the way with 635.

NATIONAL ATHLETICS LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WEST ROUND 1 – YATE, MAY 23

Cardiff Athletics made a profitable start to the new National Athletics League Championships West season with a second place finish in the match scores.

There were a number of A string individual wins for Cardiff throughout the day with the likes of sprinter Alex Azu leading the way.

Following on from representing Wales at the Loughborough International last weekend, Azu achieved the 100m and 200m double with winning times of 10.66 and 21.42.

Paralympian Funmi Oduwaiye won the women’s shot with 10.43m, while fellow GB para international Bree Cronin won the second string event with 9.63m. The pair repeated the feat in the discus with Oduwaiye winning the A string with 35.48m and Cronin victorious in the B string with 33.46m.

Multi-eventer Toks Akanbi Mortimer also had a successful day winning the men’s shot put with 12.79m and the men’s discus with 37.04m.

In the women’s short sprints, Charlotte Wingfield was second in the 100m in 12.15 but won the 200m in 25.54.

Adam Lane won the men’s 800m with a time of 1:58.32 while Richard Dangerfield was successful in the men’s javelin with a best of 57.26.

The women’s 800m was won by Rebecca Harries in 2:16.30, while Julia Teka won the 1500m in 4:45.49.

Commonwealth Games athlete and multiple Welsh Champion Rebecca Chapman won the women’s long jump with 5.59m.

Cardiff’s men won the 100m relay in 45.32 and finished second in the 4x400m in 3:32.17. The women’s team won the 4x100 in 48.29 and were second in the 4x400 in 3:32.17.

Cardiff finished second behind Swindon Harriers with a points total of 460.50.

Commonwealth Games hopeful Louisa Stoney (Belgrave Harriers) ran 52.51 at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting in Belgium on Saturday.

Welsh Athletics Performance programme athlete Issy Boffey (Enfield and Haringey AC) finished second over 800m in Germany, clocking 2:00.54.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE – YATE, MAY 24

Welsh Athletics National Development Programme athlete Darcy Coslett (Llanelli AC) ran 11.99 for the 100m and 24.34 over 200m.

Amelia Mitchell threw a PB in the Hammer throw of 57.17m.


NEWTOWN 10K – MAY 24

The Newtown 10K is held on a looped closed road course with the final kilometres run along the scenic River Severn.

This year’s men’s race was won by Frazer Knowles (Leamington Cycling and Athletics Club) in 32:51. Pablo Burns-Roa was second in 32:58 with Eric Apperley third in 33:52.

The women’s race was won by Lauren Turley in 39:38 ahead of Maddie Griffiths (Maldwyn Harriers) in 41:27 with clubmate Melissa Turnbull third in 42:06.

SARN HELEN HILL RACE: 16.5 MILE RACE AND RELAY – LAMPETER, MAY 24

This is a unique race with over 40 years of history. The full route is approximately 16 miles and starts in Lampeter and continues along the Teifi valley before winding its way up and over the hills, fields and tracks that cross the famous Sarn Helen Roman road.

The race can be run individually or as a team of three. Each member runs one leg of between five and six miles.

This year’s men’s race was won Michael Kallenberg (Swansea Harriers) in 1:50.14, while the women’s winner was Polly Summers (Sarn Helen) 2:03.08. The full results weren’t available at the time of writing.


TREFOREST 10K – MAY 24

An undulating out-and-back route with some great scenery which takes in part of the Taff Trail towards Nantgarw.

Dane Williams (Parc Bryn Bach) was the winner of this year’s men’s race in 34:13. Andy Gardiner (San Domenico RC) was second in 34:20 ahead of Thomas Wade (Parc Bryn Bach) in 34:54.

The women’s race was won by Nicola Jukes (Parc Bryn Bach) in 41:12 with clubmate Kimberley Price second in 42:10 and Delyth Williams (San Domenico RC) third in 42:27.

STRATFORD SPEED GP – NEWHAM, MAY 25

Two-time Commonwealth Games sprinter Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers) produced a scorching run in the Bank Holiday Monday heatwave to break Michelle Scutt’s 44-year-old Welsh 200m record.

After setting a new 200m personal best of 23.07 at last weekend’s Loughborough International, Brier ran a brilliant 22.79 in the shadow of the London Stadium.

The time surpasses the record of 22.80 set by Sale Harrier Scutt in Antrim way back in June of 1982.

Brier, who made her Commonwealth Games debut as a 16-year-old at Glasgow 2014, now holds the Welsh records for both 100m and 200. The sprinter hopes to return to the Scottish city for this year’s games.

Earlier in the day, the 28-year-old ran a season’s best 11.38 over 100m. Great Britain international Nell Desir (Cardiff Archers) ran 11.58.

The men’s 100m races saw Sam Gordon (Cardiff Athletics) run 10.35 and clubmate Luca Logue-Fonseca clock 10.59.

The women’s 400m saw Sian Harry (Belgrave Harriers) finish second in her heat in 53.42. Tess Mc Hugh (Sale Harriers Manchester) was fourth in 53.81.

BIGISH JUMPS AND THROWS FEST – BEDFORD, MAY 25

Multiple world and Paralympic champion Aled Davies (Cardiff Athletics) threw 15.22m in the shot put at Bedford on Monday. In the same competition, fellow Paralympian Funmi Oduwaiye (Cardiff Athletics) threw 12.08m.

Davies and Oduwaiye also contested the discus registering bests of 47.38m and 36.45m respectively. Also competing was fellow Paralympian Harrison Walsh (Swansea Harriers) who threw 54.35m.

In a separate discus pool, National Development Programme thrower Owen Garrett (Yate) threw 49.68m.

NDP multi-eventer Tiana Odugbesan jumped 5.82m in the long jump.
