48TH WELSH SENIOR, UNDER-17 AND PARA INDOOR ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – CARDIFF, JANUARY 18 AND 19

Olympic games bronze medallist Jeremiah Azu and Paralympic champion Sabrina Fortune were amongst the stars of a brilliant weekend of action at the National Indoor Athletics Centre.

Azu won the senior men’s 60m title in a new championship best of 6.64, while World Para Champion and F20 World Record holder Fortune won the senior women’s shot put with a best of 14.51m.

A high quality weekend of athletics saw a number of championship bests and personal bests from the likes of under-17 sprinters Aliyah Afolabi (Cardiff Archers) and Darcy Coslett (Llanelli AAC.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS SENIOR/UNDER-20 COMBINED EVENT CHAMPIONSHIPS, SENIOR PARA CHAMPIONSHIPS AND INDOOR WALK CHAMPIONSHIPS – SHEFFIELD JANUARY 18 AND 19

A number of Welsh athletes were amongst those competing in Sheffield over the weekend.

Amongst them was Toks Akanbi-Mortimer (Cardiff Athletics) who set three new personal bests taking part in the men’s senior pentathlon.

The new marks came in the 60m (7.14), the 60m hurdles (8.87) and shot put (12.27m), however he did not complete the competition.

Welsh Athletics Performance Programme athlete Abi Pawlett (Trafford) was using the competition to test her form in just two events in the women’s senior pentathlon.

The reigning champion clocked 8.29 in the 60m hurdles and a season’s best 14.01m in the shot put.

Birmingham Commonwealth Games competitor and Transition Programme athlete Lauren Evans (Cardiff Athletics) finished 16th in the senior women’s pentathlon with a total of 2,947, however she did not start the 800m.

Seren Redfern (Sale Harriers Manchester) took part in the Under-20 pentathlon where she finished 11th overall in a personal best total of 2,995.

TWIN PIERS 10K – LLANDUDNO, JANUARY 18

Two-time World Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games marathoner Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) was the first runner home in Llandudno.

Griffiths crossed the line in 31:58, ahead of Ben Makin (Blackburn Harriers and AC) in 33:37 and Mark Gittins (Helsby Running Club) in 34:18.

The first female finisher was Eden O’Dea (Deeside AAC), who clocked 37:36 ahead of club-mate Mia Roberts in 37:42. Third place went to Anna Drinkwater (Eryri Harriers) in 38:41.
