British Athletics League, Swansea - May 12

Sprint sensation Jeremiah Azu [Helen James] smashed his 100m and 200m personal bests at the British Athletics League Premier Division Fixture in Swansea on Sunday. Representing Cardiff Athletics in the Premier League fixture, Azu shattered his previous best of 10.56 when he clocked 10.39 in winning the 100m. Then he sliced well over half a second off his 200m personal best when he clocked 21.09 finishing second behind Chris Stone.

There were also  PBs for fellow Cardiff athletes, including Jamie Pender in the 400m with 48:40, Iestyn Edwards with 2:03.42 in the 800m and James Hunt who clocked 8:41.76 in the 3000m. In the Division One match at the same meeting, Swansea Harriers' Guy Smith produced a season's best time to win the men's 3000m in 8:27.39, while there were also wins in the shot put A and B events for fellow Harriers Patrick Swan and Daniel Cork respectively.

Regional Championships

Athletes would have been trying to impress selectors for the Inter-Regional Championships which take place on 4th August in Aberdare. The 2019 edition of the Inter-Regional Championships will see a new format with the inclusion of the Under 13 age group vying to see who is collectively the best region in Wales. The combined U20 and Senior Team will not be competing in the championships this year.

  • The venue has moved from its usual host of Penlan Athletics Track in Brecon to Aberdare. Aberdare will host the first of a new look venue format that will rotate around the regions each year.

 

West Wales Athletics Regional Championships, Swansea - May 10.

Almost 300 athletes took part in the West Wales Athletics Championships at the Swansea University Athletics Track on Saturday.

The event was open to all age groups from under-13s to senior men and women and the sunny conditions helped produce a number of seasons bests and personal bests.

Just one of the many stand out performances of the day was Neath athlete Karolinka Bacakova's PB of 42.75m to win the senior women's 4k hammer competition.

South and East Wales Regional Athletics Championships, Aberdare - May 11

The new track athletics track at Sobell Leisure Centre in Aberdare was the venue for the joint South and East Wales Championships on Saturday.

Events were held from under-13 to under-17 age groups.

IAAF World Relays, Yokohama, Japan - May 12

Cardiff Athletics sprinter Sam Gordon was part of the 26-strong Great Britain squad which returned from Japan with a bronze medal in the men's 4x100m.

Gordon provided invaluable support to the GB quartet of CJ Ujah, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Adam Gemili and Nethaneel Mitchell Blake as they finished third behind gold medallists Brazil and second place USA in a time of 38:15.

Hereford Half Marathon - May 12

Swansea Harrier Phil Matthews produced an excellent performance to win the Hereford Half Marathon on Sunday. Matthews broke the tape in a time of 71:25 to finish comfortably ahead of Sage Pearce Higgins in 74:05 and Gosport RR's Ben Toye with 74:15.

Ipswich Twilight 5K - May 11

Brighton Pheonix's Welsh international Beth Kidger produced a new personal best at the Ipswich  Twilight 5K on Saturday night. Last year's Welsh Indoor 1500m champion finished ninth in a time of 16:19 behind Morpeth Harrier Laura Weightman, who won in 15:22. 

Race for Wildlife, Undy - May 12

The Race for Wildlife, Gwent Wildlife Trust's annual race, took place in the heart of the picturesque Gwent Levels. First home was Jack Bancroft, of Bristol and West AC, in a time of 31:50, ahead of Christopher Walker, of Wells City Harriers in 36:30 and Emyr Morgan, of Les Croupiers in 37:32. The first female finisher was another Les Croupier athlete - Janneke Van Beijnum in 40:28, followed just behind by Nicola Jukes, of Parc Bryn Bach in 40:30 and Nerys Chaplin, of Spirit of Monmouth in 45:26.

Porthkerry 5MT, Porthkerry Country Park - May 12

The mixed terrain race took place within the 220 acres of Porthkerry Country Park, enjoying stunning views of the Bristol Channel and Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

The men's race was won by Oliver Williams, of White Rock Runners, in 30:18. Second was Richard Ross, of Les Croupiers in 30:36, with Lyndon Tudor Maisey, of Vegan Runners, third in 31:00. Winner of the women's race was Lucy Allen, of San Domenico, in 38:06, who beat Les Croupiers Susan Watson (39:35) to the line, with Dawn Howles third in 40:09.

Newtown 10K, - May 12

Shrewsbury AC's Paul Jones won the Newtown 10K in warm sunny conditions on Sunday in a time of 33:49. He was followed in by Joe Murray, of the host club Maldwyn Harriers, in 34:18 and Aberystwyth AC's Gary Wyn Davies in 35:54.

Winner of the women's race was another home club runner - Jenny Evans, who clocked 42:31. Second was Donna Morris, of Builth and District RC in 43:29 and third was Caryl Wyn Davies in 43:38.

Bryn Bach parkrun, Tredegar - May 11

Parc Bryn Bach's Lauren Cooper produced the fastest female parkrun time in the whole of the UK when she clocked 16:58 at her club's home event on Saturday morning.
