Joshua Griffiths and Alaw Beynon-Thomas claimed victories at the inaugural fixture in the Welsh 5k Series – Pembrey on Saturday.

Two socially distanced races at Pembrey Country Park heralded a welcome return to road racing in Wales for a select number of athletes over five laps of the closed road circuit.

Beynon-Thomas of Les Croupiers RC was the overwhelming favourite in the ladies race and used the opening of five laps to find her feet before pulling clear of the women’s field.

Her victory in 17:14 came 30 seconds ahead of Donna Morris of Builth & District Running Club with Jasmine Cooper of Cardiff Metropolitan University in third with a time of 17:59.

International marathoner Griffiths similarly ran away from his rivals, passing the first kilometre mark in 2:44 and closing in14:23 a week after finishing fifth at the Bristol Track Club Elite 5k.

Cardiff’s Dan Nash finished second in 14:29 with Morgan Davies of Swansea Harriers third in 14:35.
