The Cardiff Cross Challenge is back!
The only World Athletics Cross Country Tour event in the UK returns to Llandaff Fields on Sunday 8th November offering a chance for over 3000 athletes to tackle the highly regarded, silver-label race in the nation’s capital.
Here’s everything you need to know…
Double European 1500m champion Laura Muir and three-time European Cross Country gold medallist Will Barnicoat head a glittering line up of talent at Sunday’s Cardiff Cross Challenge.
They will be joined by a number of top continental athletes and an impressive domestic entry for the World Athletics Cross Country Tour Silver Label event.
Once again, the capital’s running extravaganza hosts the opening fixture of the annual British Athletics Cross Challenge Series, this year presented by SportShoes x Nike.
The Llandaff Fields venue, known for its challenging but fast course, also welcomes hundreds of club runners from across south Wales and the south west of England contesting the second fixture in this year’s John H.Collins Gwent League.
The 10-race timetable boasts a wide range of competitors from total cross country novices in the primary school openers to big-name international athletes in the showpiece races.
Few of those star names come bigger than three-time Olympian Muir. The Dundee and Hawkhill athlete returns to Cardiff for the first time since setting a new track record over 3,000m at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in December of 2023.
Better known for her track exploits, Muir made a winning return to the cross country arena in February of this year at the Scottish Cross Country Championships – 14 years after her last appearance at the event.
The Tokyo Olympics 1500m silver medallist features in the senior women’s race where she will be up against the likes of rising endurance phenomenon Innes FitzGerald (Exeter Harriers).
No stranger to Llandaff Fields, where she romped to victory in the Under-20 race at this event last year, FitzGerald already has six European Cross Country individual and team gold medals to her name.
On the track, the 20-year-old won 3,000m and 5,000m gold at the 2025 European Under-20 Championships in Tampere. Now she steps up to the senior event, run over a 6,400m course, for the first time.
Other domestic entries toeing the line in the senior women’s race include 2023 UK 5K champion Verity Ockenden (Swansea Harriers), European Cross Country 10th placer Kate Axford (Belgrave Harriers), 2026 UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Champion Jess Gibbon (Reading AC) and 2025 BUCS Cross Country Championships silver medallist Poppy Tank (City of Plymouth).
The overseas challenge is led by Dutch Under-20 5,000m champion Inge Lugtenberg and Spain’s Sara Reimondo, who finished fourth at the 2024 Malaga Half Marathon.
The senior men’s race, contested over 9,600m, also boasts a strong domestic entry spearheaded by Barnicoat, who has three European Cross Country Championships team gold medals to go with his trio of Under-20 and Under-23 individual titles.
The Aldershot, Farnham and District AC man also has two European Under-23 Championship 5,000m bronze medals to his name.
Another entry with excellent track pedigree is Arlo Ludewick (Herne Hill Harriers) who won the UK 1500m title at Birmingham this summer.
The field is packed with multi-talented athletes such as Callum Elson (Cambridge and Coleridge AC) who won a silver medal in the road mile at the 2023 World Athletics Road Running Championships and a bronze medal in the mixed relay at the 2025 European Cross Country Championships.
Meanwhile, Mahamed Mahamed (Southampton AC) is a previous runner-up at this event before turning his attention to the marathon distance – finishing fourth in London two years ago.
Also hoping to challenge will be James Kingston (Tonbridge AC) who won this year’s UK Inter-Counties Cross Country title and Matthew Ramsden (Blackburn Harriers) who finished sixth in the Under-23 race at last year European Cross Country Championships.
Jesse Fokkenrood, who claimed a 1500m silver medal at this year’s Dutch championships, is likely to lead the overseas challenge in the senior men’s race.
There will also be plenty of top quality action throughout the age group races where a trio of Swansea Harriers will be hoping to replicate the form they showed at last weekend’s English Cross Country Relays.
Welsh Athletics Transition Programme athlete Libby Hale, National Development Programme runner Millie Pierce and clubmate Holly Humphreys shone as they earned a second place finish in the junior women’s race.
All three will be running individually in a high quality Under-18 and Under-20 women’s race, which will be contested over 4,450m.
They will be joined by NDP athletes Bryony Boyce (Cardiff Athletics), Nansi Griffiths (Carmarthen Harriers), Sioned John (Swansea Harriers), Amelia Williams (Carmarthen Harriers), Cara Scott (Menai Track and Field), Madison Hughes (Maldwyn Harriers) and Heather Watson (Deeside AAC).
The men’s equivalent age group race features another NDP athlete Thomas Loynes (Neath Harriers), who like his Welsh female counterparts, will be pitting his wits against some of the best young talent from across Wales and the UK.
They include Nate Greig (Bridgend Athletics) who last month won the Under-18 and Under-20 men’s race at the Welsh Inter Schools Cross Country Championships in Brecon.
The Under-14 and Under-16 age groups will be similarly hotly contested by emerging talent from Wales and beyond.
Among the home runners will be Emily Dando (Swansea Harriers) and Lewis Durston (Bridgend Athletics) who won their respective races at the Welsh Inter Schools Championships.
At the other end of the age scale, many veteran athletes will be representing their clubs in the Gwent League fixture, including M65 runner Ifan Lloyd (Swansea Harriers), who broke his own Welsh record at the Swansea Half Marathon in June.
The action begins at 11.02am with the boys and girls primary schools races, which will get underway following the observance of a two minute silence to mark Remembrance Sunday.
