FELL Ready in the Summer Sun!
Our tutors took leaders and coaches through the key areas of leading groups on fell and hill terrain, covering everything from off-road running techniques and group management to risk assessments and dealing with changing conditions.
There were some great questions and plenty of discussion throughout the day, with first-hand experiences from the group helping to bring the learning to life and explore some of the real situations leaders may face when out with a group.
The tutors also talked through the scope and boundaries of the FELL qualification, including leading on familiar routes that are well within the group's ability and in environmentally benign conditions. They explained where the qualification does not apply, such as unfamiliar or more remote areas and adverse conditions, and where further Mountain Training or navigation qualifications may be needed.
On successful completion, our attendees will gain their FELL licence, which provides insurance to lead groups within the limits of the course content. This is alongside the requirement to hold a satisfactory Category C Outdoor First Aid course and an up-to-date leader or coaching licence. Building on their LiRF and CiRF, the course looked at how to manage risk in a more unpredictable environment, as well as the practical skills needed to tackle different terrain. Thankfully, the weather was on our side, although it was certainly a little warm, giving the group a great opportunity to put some of the learning into practice, including ascending, descending and dealing with different surfaces underfoot.
It was great to see the group developing their knowledge and confidence throughout the session, with the emphasis firmly on making good decisions and giving runners a safe and enjoyable experience.
A big thank you to everyone who came along and got involved, and especially to our tutors for sharing their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. The questions, conversations and willingness to learn made it a really enjoyable course.

A great reminder that leading on the hills is about much more than knowing where the path goes it's about understanding your group, reading the environment and making the right decisions to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable adventure.
