Welsh Athletes Jenny Nesbitt and Matt Willis will take on the World’s best this weekend in Aarhus, Denmark on what organisers are billing as the toughest of courses for the World Cross Country Championships.

Jenny will go into the event full of confidence having claimed both the Welsh and British Senior Cross-country titles in the past month. The Chris Jones coached Worcester AC athlete, was disappointed to miss out on a place in the GB team for the Spar European Cross-Country Championships in Tilburg after a below-par performance at the Liverpool Cross Challenge but has bounced back in 2019.

“I was really happy with my race in Loughborough, I stuck to the race plan – for a change – and felt strong on the last lap and able to push on to take the win. I was grinning coming over the line, not just because I’d won, but knowing I’d secured my place on the team for Aarhus.” Said Jenny.

“It’ll be a tough race, but hopefully the course will suit the British team more than some other nations, and we can put in some strong performances. We’ve got such a talented group of senior female athletes in Wales and Britain right now, so I’m really proud to have made the team.”

Jenny will be part of a 24 strong British squad heading out to Denmark this weekend with full male and female, Senior and Junior teams selected.

Wrexham AC’s Matt Willis will be looking for more success on the cross-country having been part of the Silver medal winning U20 GB team in Tilburg. Despite winning the Loughborough trial race to secure his spot, Matt was clear that breaking into the top 30 out in Aarhus will be a big achievement:

I’m aiming for top 40, more than that would be fantastic –I’ve had a great season, it’s my first time at the World Champs, and I want to go out and enjoy it. It’s  going to be a tough course which will suit me and the team, we'll go out an push hard and see what happens.”

The event will be available to watch live via the BBC. Watch our full interview with Jenny below:
