Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

Supporting the mental health of runners in Wales.

13/05/2024 00:00, In Blog /

This week, 13 to 19 May, is Mental Health Awareness Week 2024. We’re supporting our partner Mind Cymru and their #NoMindLeftBehind campaign.

Every year, 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem but too many of us aren’t getting the help we need.

To help tackle this vitally important issue, we recently announced a two-year partnership with Mind Cymru aimed at improving mental health through the power of running.

Our partnership focuses on developing mental health champions in each of our 100 affiliated running clubs and 60 Run Wales social running groups across Wales.

We are delighted to share that this Saturday Mind will host the first in-person training session with our first cohort of mental health champions. Following the completion of a combination of online training modules and in-person training, each champion will be equipped to:

  • Confidently start conversations to support or improve the wellbeing of those experiencing mental health problems
  • Challenge stigma and signpost to mental health services
  • Help spread the benefits of movement for mental health within communities
  • Support people to start, continue or return to running

James Williams, CEO, Welsh Athletics, shared:

This week marks an exciting step forward on working towards our mission of helping to improve mental health in Wales through the power of running. Mental health champions will play a key role in supporting runners to access mental health support, have conversations about mental health and tackle stigma.

I would like to thank all the champions for stepping forward and helping us support the mental health of runners across Wales. Diolch yn fawr.

How can I get my club or group involved?

Following the pilot in South and North Wales, we will aim to roll out the training across all clubs and groups in Wales. We will be in touch with details on the recruitment process and training dates for all clubs and groups shortly. In the meantime, start to think about who could be the champion in your running community.

What can I do this week to help raise awareness of mental health?

  • Organise a #RunandTalk with a group of friends or family and encourage each other to talk about mental health.
  • Raise vital funds for Mind. Find out how here.
  • Campaign with Mind to help spread the word. Find out how here.

What support is available?

  • This Mental Health Awareness Week you’ll find tips, advice and support on Mind's website and through Mind’s online community, Side by Side. You can also speak to someone via their helplines or at one of the local Minds.

Keep an eye on our social channels this week for inspiring stories from our running community.

Together, let's fight mental health through the power of running!
