#FeatureFriday - Cardiff Athletics – Summer of Athletics

23/07/2021 00:00, In Blog /

It’s shaping up to be a busy summer for Cardiff Athletic Club as they begin offering opportunities to children and young people across Cardiff to get involved in athletics. Across the school holidays, the club is supporting athletics activity across the capital through sessions at City Hall Lawns, as part of Cardiff Council Summer of Smiles, delivering sessions at Grange Pavilion which will become part of a larger long term project to support activity within the local community, and through several Starting Blocs summer camps being held at Cardiff International Sports Campus.

Cardiff Summer of Smiles

Cardiff Athletics Academy will be delivering activity on Cardiff City Hall Lawns on the following dates:

  • Thursday 29th July 10 -12.30 pm, 1.20-4 pm, 5-7 pm
  • Friday 30th July 10 -12.30 pm, 1.20-4 pm, 5-7 pm
  • Saturday 31st July 10 -12.30pm, 1.20-4pm, 5-7pm

£2 entry to the main festival site and bookings must be made via Cardiff Summer of Smiles.

Grange 2 Track #G2T

Over the last few weeks, Cardiff Athletics has been working with Grange Pavilion to organise 4 weeks of athletics in the heart of Grangetown. Starting on Wednesday 28th July 2-4 pm, coaches from Cardiff Athletic Academy will be delivering fun athletics sessions to primary school-aged children, introducing them to running, jumping, and throwing activities in a fun and engaging way. The children will then be invited along to Cardiff International Sports Campus on Friday 20th June to take part in a festival of athletics competition, where children will take part in the 75m, vortex throw, standing long jump, 600m, and a relay.

Adding to this, as part of the Grange 2 Track or #G2T, young people from the local community are being invited along to get involved in learning new skills in delivering athletics to support the project and to enhance their own personal development by completing a recognised NGB leadership certification. It is hoped that guided by the club's coaches and through completion of a Leading Athletics course, the young people will be empowered to continue delivering the sessions at Grange Pavilion in September with support from the club. This will enable there to be further opportunities for local children to participate in athletics.

If you’re local to the area and aged between 15-19 and would like to get involved in the leadership program or would like to find out more information, please complete this short questionnaire.
