We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Liz Hughes last week following a long struggle with cancer. Liz had been a member of Aberystwyth AC and Cardiff AC during her running career and won the North Wales Cross Country Championships on two occasions – 1989 and again in 1991 and won the North Wales 10 mile championship in 1988 and 1989.

Liz won the Welsh Marathon Championship in 1987 and represented Wales at senior level on two occasions in 1990 and 1991, winning the Aberdeen Marathon on both occasions, which also doubled up as the Scottish Championship, so she was a two times Scottish marathon champion to go alongside her Welsh Marathon title. Liz also won the Welsh 10 mile championship in 1992 and was third in the half marathon championship in 1991. Liz’s best marathon time came in the London Marathon in 1990 when she ran 2-47-08 when she finished 45th woman. Despite the time since Liz ran the marathon her time still ranks her amongst the top 50 women in Wales.

One of her last races was the Man v Horse in 2019 where she won her W55 age category in 4-14-57, almost 15 minutes ahead of Aberystwyth AC clubmate Anita Worthing. It was shortly after this race that Liz was diagnosed with cancer.

Paul Williams, Chairman of Aberystwyth AC shared:

Liz was very unassuming of all her accomplishments in her running career, she never boasted of her astounding results, which most of us can only dream of. Her achievements whilst in the Club will never be surpassed by anyone and she will be fondly remembered. Not only was she a runner, but also the Club secretary for years. She gave everything to the cause.

Deepest sympathy to all her family and friends, with extended condolences to Dic who coached her throughout her running career. She will be sadly missed.

On behalf of the North Wales Cross Country Association, Aberystwyth AC and Welsh Athletics we wish to express our condolences to Liz’s family and friends and in particular her partner Dic Evans.
