Day 2 Round-Up: 2023 Welsh Senior & U15 Championships

Day 2 of the Welsh Senior and U15 Track and Field Championships 2023 was set up perfectly after a great first day. There was more action across all events, with some great results.
The day started with the first seated throws event to be included at the Outdoor Welsh Championships with Kieran Jones (DSW Para Athletics) took the gold medal in the para male seated shot with a personal best throw of 8.18m, Jac Sheehan (DSW Para Athletics) finished second and Paddy Pepper (British Wheelchair Athletics Association) completed the podium. Ellie Bowen (DSW Para Athletics) was champion in the para female seated shot, reaching a distance of 6.36m. The seated discuss was won by Jac Sheehan (DSW Para Athletics) who threw 17.58m.
The senior men’s discus saw Nicholas Percy (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers) win with a distance of 62.55m whilst Pembrokeshire Harriers’ James Tomlinson took the Welsh national champion with a personal best of 57.30m and Dan Greaves came third, throwing 56.80m completing the top three. 2022 Commonwealth bronze medallist, Harrison Walsh (DSW Para Athletics) threw 55.39m on the day.
Jasmine Larsen (Southampton AC) took the gold in the senior women’s javelin after her effort of 43.81 and Lleucu Lloyd (Pembrokeshire Harriers) became Welsh champion, throwing 41.81m. Hollie Arnold (Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC) also competed in her last competition before the Paris World Para Athletics Championships, throwing a distance of 36.71m to win the para female Welsh title.
There was a strong field of British athletes in both the men’s and women’s steeplechase. The senior men’s 3000m steeplechase was won by Adam Kirk-Smith (Woodford Green AC), finishing with a time of 9:03.70, with Thomas Chaston (Belgrave Harriers) becoming Welsh Champion after a time of 9:17.92, becoming the third generation of his family to claim the title. Jessica Sheriff (Belgrave Harriers) won the senior women’s with a time of 10:20.66. Whilst Hattie Reynolds (City of Norwich AC) ran the qualifying time for the European U20 Championships that will take place in Jerusalem this August.
It was a great weekend for U15 athlete Libby Hale (Swansea Harriers) who broke another record after extending her own record in the 1500m yesterday. Libby ran a Championship Best Performance today in the U15 girls 800m, beating the old record that was set in 2009 by over 3 seconds, setting the new record time at 2:11.33.
Ahead of the World Para Championships next month, Aled Davies (Cardiff Athletics) claimed another senior Welsh title, winning the ambulant/para male shot put with a distance of 15.58m, whilst Michael Jenkins (Pembrokeshire Harriers) took silver throwing 13.72m. In the senior men's shot put Patrick Swan (Cornwall AC) took the title with a new personal best throw of 17.87m.
In the U15 Girls Hammer Throw, there was a new Championship Best Performance for Evie Cooper (Neath Harriers) throwing a huge distance of 50.81m, a 3m improvement on her previous best to see her ranked 1 in the UK.
The final events of the day were the 200m. Max Evans (Maldwyn Harriers) took gold in the U15 boys final, running in 22.58s and Aliyah Afolabi (Cardiff Archers) ran exceptionally well in the U15 girls final, winning in 25.39s for her second win of the weekend. Hannah Longden (Cardiff Athletics) also became Welsh champion for a second time this weekend following her victory in the 100m final yesterday, winning the senior women’s 200m with a time of 24.20s. The day finished with Arron Owen Cardiff Athletics) becoming Welsh champion in the senior men’s 200m finishing in 21.72s, with Joe Berry (Newport Harriers) taking silver with a time of 21.94s, and Blake Tiger-Lee Brown (Sale Harriers Manchester) completed the top three.
