This weekend will see the 74th edition of the Welsh Schools National Track & Field Championships take place at Cardiff International Sports Campus.

Over 500 pupils will compete across a busy timetable for their School Districts to be crowned Champions. There will be 8 School Districts competing including; Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan, Dyfed, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales, Powys and South East Wales. It was Cardiff and the Vale that claimed the most age group titles at last year's Championships, taking home 5 in total, whilst Glamorgan Valleys claimed one age group victory.

Pupils in the middle age group will be hoping to gain automatic selection for the Welsh Schools team as a result of their performances on Saturday for the Schools International at Grangemouth, Scotland on Saturday 15th July.

The weekend will see some of the pupils recently selected to represent Team Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago later this summer in action. Along with a number of new Welsh Champions recently crowned at the Welsh Senior & U15 Championships.

Joseph Berry (South East Wales), Sophie Lisk (Cardiff and the Vale), Lewis Stephens (Glamorgan Valleys) and Jessica Lee (Dyfed) will all take to the track on Saturday as they start their preparations for Trinbago 2023.

The 2023 Welsh U15 Girls 1500m Champion Libby Hale (Afan Nedd Tawe) will be in action, after recently extending her own Welsh Record over the distance. Hale took victory in this distance at last year’s meeting, after narrowly beating Millie Gold (Cardiff and the Vale) over the finish line.

Matilda Quick (Afan Nedd Tawe) will be looking to make it two wins a row in the High Jump after claiming the title at last year’s meeting, having already cleared 1.63m this season.

Looking to continue a successful run is Aidan Angilletta (North East Wales). Angilletta recently picked up 4 Welsh titles at the Welsh Senior & U15 Championships in the U15 Boys High Jump, Javelin, Long Jump and 80m Hurdles. This weekend he will be in action over the 80m Hurdles and High Jump.

Another Welsh Record holder will also be in action this weekend, Olivia Scrimshaw (North East Wales) recently extended her own Triple Jump record over the weekend and will be looking to take another Welsh title this weekend. Scrimshaw will also compete in the Long Jump and 75m Hurdles.

We wish all pupils taking part this weekend good luck and we hope you enjoy the day.
