Speed

Speed Event Group - Our priorities:

  • Delivering process orientated athlete and coach programmes with a performance focus

  • Provide performance focused support to identified athlete and coach pairs

  • Support the advancement of coaching within the event group

Athlete Support Programme

Welsh Athletics currently support ten speed athletes as part of the Athlete Support Programme. These athletes will have Great Britain representation in the summer firmly in their sights with several events available in 2019 including; European u20 Championships, European u23 Championships, European Team Championships and the IAAF World Championships.

National Programme

The national programme has provided an opportunity for the highest ranked athletes in Wales across short Sprints (100m/200m) and short hurdles to spend time together with their personal coaches during the Winter.

National programme objectives:

  • Raise individual standards (all events)

  • Develop baseline relay skills across all programmes (Regional/National)

  • Transition athletes into British teams (u20+, all events)

  • Challenge Welsh national records (4x100m)

Regional Programme

The purpose of the regional programme is to bring together athletes and coaches for event practical and education sessions. Our goal is to develop a network of athletes across the regions with the skills to move up into the national programme and eventually represent Wales.

Regional activity is by invitation to athletes in the u15/u17/u20 age group, however it is open to all coaches.  Coaches are welcome from any club or event group regardless of whether personal athletes are invited.

Latest newsletter - Jan 2019

“We currently have many very promising athletes in sprints and hurdles, the task for the next few years will be to convert talented juniors into successful seniors and for the seniors to establish themselves at the highest levels. This is a collective responsibility that can only be achieved by working together (athletes, coaches, support teams). Leading this programme is a responsibility I relish and look forward to progressing with those seeking the challenge. With the regional and national programmes, as well as, the Athlete Support Programme this is an excellent time to be an emerging athlete in Wales"

Neil Wheeler, National Speed lead.
