WSAA Statement SIAB CROSS COUNTRY 2021

13/01/2021 00:00, In Blog / School News /

Welsh Schools Athletic Association today confirms the cancellation of the 2021 SIAB Cross Country event which was due to be held at Callendar Park, Falkirk, Scotland on Saturday, March 20th. We understand that this will be another massive disappointment for all those aspiring to take part. However, as always, our overriding rationale behind this decision is based on a determination to ensure the safety of athletes, team managers, officers, and officials.

We are grateful to Welsh Athletics for their guidance and support during this challenging time and particular thanks go to Interim Chief Executive James Williams and Chairman Steve Perks.

We would also thank our colleagues at English, Scottish and Irish Schools who have worked tirelessly to arrive at this decision. Special thanks go to Pete Russell and Margaret McInally of Scottish Schools who coordinated a full consultation before a final decision was taken. We were all mindful of a rapidly changing situation around Covid 19 and the decision was not taken lightly and reflects not only the concerns over the event itself but also around travel and accommodation.

WSAA has convened a meeting to be held on Saturday, February 6th where a final decision on the staging of the WSAA Championships (scheduled for March 6th) will be taken. We are also awaiting a response from colleagues at Sportshall UK with respect to the Welsh Sportshall Final (scheduled for March 7th). Please lookout for a further news item on Monday, February 8th. with respect to these events.

We ask that all school athletes across Wales take care of themselves and others in the difficult weeks ahead.
