#FeatureFriday - Aber’s young runners making up for lost time

As our schools re-open and a new term begins, Aberystwyth Athletic Club is once again able to roll out its junior running sessions. The past year has undoubtedly been challenging for our young people and they have shown enormous resilience during this long and tough period.

The club has traditionally had strong support for its junior sessions and if the interest shown already is anything to go by that is set to continue according to one of the leaders, Enid Gruffudd,

“After not being able to run any junior running sessions over the last long months, we managed to run a few sessions before the summer break while naturally strictly adhering to Covid guidelines. “It was great to see the young people back, their excitement and energy filling the Penweddig field where we train, and just keen to give it their all.”

With the summer holidays over, another running year begins and there is a warm welcome for new recruits as Enid explains,

“We’ve all had a break over the summer holidays, and we as coaches are raring to go and start a new year of running, enjoying the outdoors and the local area with our young people."

“We welcome young people of all abilities. It’s all about seeing the young people out enjoying being active, developing their strength and fitness as runners whilst also enjoying and making new friends. We are very lucky as a Club and have a great team of coaches who willingly give up their time to coach and encourage our juniors.”

Sonny Forbes has been a member of the junior club for a number of years and says it’s great to be back,

“I’m really happy to be back at running Club as it’s nice to see old friends and also it’s good to be back doing the exercise that I love and enjoy.”

Enid realises this has been a tough time for all but hopefully we can now move forward confidently,

“We have had great support over the past year, from the parents and carers, coaches and helpers as well as our local MP, Ben Lake while Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig has allowed us to use its outdoor facilities ensuring our Club can offer these opportunities to our young people and for generations to come. Diolch o galon”
