Weekend Round Up (19th/20th Feb)

This weekend has yet again provided some incredible perfomances over an array of different disciplines. 

Seville Marathon - Spain

Josh Griffiths (Swansea) had the race of his life at the Seville Marathon, running the fastest time by nearly 2 minutes! The Swansea athlete covered the marathon distance in 2:11.27, another Commonwealth Games Nomination standard and a World Athletics Qualifying Standard. His time moves him to 4th on the Welsh All Time list.

Not to be outdone, Andrew Davies (Stockport) also ran a Personal Best of 2:14.23, showing age is just a number, as he also secures a Commonwealth Games Nomination Standard. Having achieved this standard, Andy now has the chance to compete at his third Commonwealth Games, pending selection.

Birmingham Muller GP - Birmingham

This weekend saw a few athletes competing at the next leg of the World Indoor Tour in Birmingham as they gear up for the British Championships and World Indoor Trials next weekend.

In the mens 60m, Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff) finished 8th in the final, clocking 6.63s, just outside his indoor Personal Best set earlier this year, showing he is in great form going into the World Indoor Trials next weekend.

Piers Copeland (Pontypridd) also showed he was rounding into good form just at the right time in the mens 1,500m. Closing with a fat last lap, he ran an Indoor Personal Best of 3:36.12 to finish 5th in a very strong field.

It will be exciting to watch these two and all the other athletes next weekend at the British Indoor Athletics Championships.


BUCS Indoor Championships - Sheffield

On what is one of the biggest weekends of the year for university sport, a number of athletes took part in the BUCS Indoor Championships.

Kicking off the weekend, Hannah Brier (Swansea) claimed her third BUCS 60m title, winning the Women’s final in 7.37s, not far outside her personal best of 7.31s.

In the Men’s 60m Ambulant final, John Bridge (Cardiff Met) placed 6th, stopping the clock in a personal best time of 7.67s.

In the Women’s 60m Hurdles final, Grace Morgan (Cardiff Archers) placed 8th, with a time of 8.87s, unfortunately hitting a hurdle in the final having run a personal best of 8.53 in the semi-final, whilst Tom Wilcock (Northampton) placed 6th in a time of 8.26s in the mens equivalent.

In the longest sprint event, the Women's 400m, Ffion Roberts (Cardiff) ran a huge personal best of 54.92s to take home a silver medal! Bronwen Reed (Trafford) just missed out on a medal with a 4th place finish, recording a time of 55.80s, which was a seasons best performance.  

In the Women's long jump, Rebecca Chapman (Cardiff) claimed a silver medal jumping 6.20m.

James Heneghan (Cardiff) had one of the best races to take away a gold medal from Sheffield. The Cardiff athlete showed he is a championship performer, running away from the field to win in 3:47.47 in the 1500m. Oliver Barbaresi (Thames Vallley) made it two Welsh men on the podium, picking up a bronze medal in a Personal Best of 3:49.56. Remi Adebiyi (Newport) finished 7th in 3:53.98.

The Mens 800m provided another medal, with David Locke (Cardiff) scoring third, posting a time of 1:51.67.

In the Women's 3,000m, Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach) placed 7th in a time of 9:42.47, just 3 seconds outside her personal best. 

In the men's 15 lap event, it was Michael Ward (Cardiff) who became BUCS Champion in a very exciting and close finish. Stopping the clock in 8:36.36, he was just one tenth of a second ahead of second place.

Welsh Junior Indoor Open - NIAC

Junior athletes once again shone this weekend. A well attended indoor open produced some fantastic resutls. Highlights include:

  • U15 Girls 1,500m : 1st Libby Hale (Swansea) - 4:35.94; New WELSH AGE BEST 
  • U13 Girls 800m : 1st Lois Codling (Newport Harriers) 2:23.07; New WELSH AGE BEST
  • U15 Girls Shot : 1st Matilda Quick (Swansea) - 9.89m - she broke the Welsh record in her heat with a time of 8.63 which was a record that had stood since 1989
  • U17 Mens 60m Hurdles : 1st Adam Dingley - 8.53s
  • U15 Boys 60m Hurdles : 1st Luca Phillips (Cardiff Archers) - 9.50s
  • U15 Girls 60m Hurdles : 1st Laila-Jae Belgrave (Swindon Harriers) - 9.45s
  • U17 Women Long Jump : 1st Ella Bowell (Bristol) - 5.34m
  • U17 Men 800m : 1st Iwan Wilson (Llanelli) - 2:08.42

Gwent League - Blaise Castle, Bristol

In the fourth match of the Gwent Leauge, Owain Jones (Bristol and West) secured victory ahead of Phillip Matthews (Parc Bryn Bach Runners) and Luke Burgess (University of the West of England). Whilst in the Senior Women's race, Chelsea Creak (Bristol and West) took a nearly 30 second victory ahead of Katrina Entwistle (Bristol and West) and Amy Partridge (Bristol and West).
