BORIS HANZEKOVIC MEMORIJAL – ZAGREB, MAY 26
Issy Boffey (Enfield and Haringey) followed up her 800m silver medal at last weekend’s UK Championships with another second place finish in Zagreb.
The Welsh Commonwealth Games selection recorded another sub two minute time as she clocked 1:59.70 finishing narrowly behind another British athlete Phobe Gill.
At the same meeting, fellow Glasgow team-mate Charlotte Henrich (Invicta East Kent AC), who broke Michelle Scutt’s Welsh 400m record in Birmingham, finished fifth over the same distance in 50.89.
WELSH SENIOR, UNDER-18 AND PARA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS – CARDIFF, JUNE 27-28
Cardiff’s International Sports Campus played host to a remarkable weekend of athletics at the Welsh Senior, Under18 and Para Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
As well as a number of Team Wales Commonwealth Games athletes, the 700-strong entry also attracted some of the top young talent from across the UK as it incorporated the Great Britain trials for the upcoming European Athletics Under-18 Championships in Rieti.
There were championship bests galore and a Welsh age group 400m record for National Development Programme sprinter Darcy Coslett (Llanelli AC), who was one of those to book an automatic selection spot in Italy next month.
Elsewhere, there was the usual fierce competition for Welsh titles, which included Team Wales member Adele Nicoll (Birchfield Harriers) winning shot put gold and the new Venissa Head Trophy which is presented in honour of the legendary thrower’s achievements.
Other stand out performances featured Olympian Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) dominating the senior men’s 400m final and some spectacularly close finishes including NDP athlete Thomas Loynes (Neath Harriers) winning the senior men’s 800m on the line.
The event also made history by including frame running races in its schedule for the first time.
WANDA DIAMOND LEAGUE, PARIS – JUNE 28
Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff Athletics) continued his build up to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games at the Wanda Diamond League meeting, which went ahead with an amended schedule due to the heatwave which has hit Paris.
Wales’ fastest man over 100m finished eighth in a time of 10.18. USA’s Trayvon Bromell won the race in 9.91.
NOVA COAST HALF MARATHON – PRESTATYN, JUNE 28
This event celebrates the beautiful seaside town of Prestatyn and the surrounding communities, offering spectacular sights, sounds, and atmosphere as well as a fast and exciting route.
The winner of this year’s men’s race was James Yarwood (Wrexham AAC) who stopped the clock in 1:18.18. Second was Aaron Dodwell in 1:18.43 ahead of Mathew Baker in 1:19.47.
The winner of the women’s race was Natasha Jones in 1:32.56 with Lisa Allsup second in 1:36.02 and Hayley Parkes (GOG Triathlon Club) third in 1:39.07.
HUNDRED HOUSE 10K – BUILTH WELLS, JUNE 28
The hot weather cleared in time for the start of the race which was run in warm but fresher conditions.
Hosted along undulating lanes in the stunning mid-Wales countryside, this year’s men’s race was won by Aidan Zembrzuski (Builth and District) in 37:22. Jack Copson was second in 38:12 and Phil Morris (Builth and District) third in 40:03.
Fourth place overall in 40:13 went to Donna Morris (Builth and District) which also brought her the honours in the women’s race where clubmate Mel Sadie was second home in 47:00. Rhianna Slade-Jones was third in 49:07.
CRYOCUBE WALES MARATHON – PEMBROKESHIRE, JUNE 28
The Wales Marathon is the final challenge of the demanding Long Course Weekend in Pembrokeshire, which also features a 3.8km open water swim and 112-mile bike ride on the previous two days.
The stunning but challenging marathon starts in Tenby and journeys through the exquisite Pembrokeshire countryside to Pembroke Castle, before returning along the stunning coastline.
The men’s marathon was won by Benjamin Goodfellow (Team NFT) in 2:38.32 ahead of Belgium’s Arnold Douterlungne (No Limit Team) and Welsh athlete Michael Roderick (Tri Hard Harriers) in 2:43.46.
The women’s marathon was won by Megan Davies (Army Triathlon Association) in 2:52.41 with Natalie Lawrence (NL Fitness Team Nat) second in 3:00.17 and Brooke Gillies third in 3:07.16.
There are also half marathon, 10K and 5K races on the final day of the weekend.
Men’s half marathon: 1st Jack Reddy 1:18.41; 2nd Rhodri Williams (Sarn Helen) second in 1:21.57; 3rd Rhys Howells (Team NFT) 1:22.04.
Women’s half marathon: 1st Polly Summers (Sarn Helen) 1:24.08; 2nd Ashleigh Howells 1:27.07; 3rd Joanna Callan 1:34.13.
Men’s 10K: 1st Jimmy Davis (Carmarthen Harriers) 34:22; 2nd Josh Barnett (Carmarthen Harriers) 35:47; 3rd Harley Morris (Sawmill) 35:59.
Women’s 10K: 1st Clara Rhodes (Newport Under-18 Triathletes) 39:34; 2nd Lily Williams (Celtic Tri) 40:05; 3rd Ffion Mulford (Heathwood Tri) 42:26.
Men’s 5K: 1st Craig Williams (Newport Harriers) 15:33; 2nd Jacob Heaton 17:22; 3rd Rory Collins 17:58.
Women’s 5k: 1st Kayley Price (Newport Harriers) 17:12 (also second overall); 2nd Alesha Santos (Rhondda Athletics Club 18:45; 3rd Lily Morgan (Carmarthen Harriers) 19:05.
BLAENAVON HERITAGE 5 MILER – BLAENAVON, JUNE 28
The race celebrates the industrial heritage of Blaenavon, starting at the Blaenavon Steam Railway. Results of this year’s event aren’t available at the time of writing but should be published at the link below.
