BRITISH MILERS CLUB TOOING BEC RECORD BREAKER – AUGUST 19
Glasgow Commonwealth Games competitors Melissa Courtney-Bryant and Ava Lloyd were amongst a host of Welsh athletes competing in London.
In a high quality meeting, Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) won the women’s 1500m A race in a new meeting record of 4.06.29.
Meanwhile, Lloyd (Wigan and District), who contested the mile for Wales in Scotland, finished fourth in the women’s 800m A race in 2.02.80.
The women’s 800m B race saw Rachel McClay (Bracknell AC) finish seventh in 2.10.28, while in the women’s 800m C race Lilly Oakenfull (Newport Harriers) placed third in a personal best of 2.11.24.
In the men’s 800m B race David Locke (Cardiff Athletics) was fifth in 1.48.49. National Development programme athlete Sam Hembry was fifth in the men’s D race in 1.50.79. The E race saw Ewan Sparey (Bristol and West) clock 1.52.18 in fourth place.
Moving up to the men’s 1500m, the B race saw Piers Copeland (Pontypridd Roadents) finish eighth in 3.40.86, while in the E race NDP athlete Henry Evans (Cardiff Athletics) was third in 3.50.29. Larry Ryan (Belgrave/Cardiff Athletics) was second in 3:58.90 in the G race.
In the 3000m A race, NDP athlete Bryony Boyce (Cardiff Athletics) was tenth in 9.44.49.
NORTH WALES ENDURANCE 2 – DEESIDE, AUGUST 21
Almost 100 athletes took part in the North Wales Endurance event at Deeside Stadium, which incorporated male and female 3,000m masters international races.
Nick Sasha won the men’s 3,000m in 9:46.18, while the women’s race was won by Nicola Sutton (Preston Harriers) in 10:25.94.
Amongst the other results, Spencer Jones (Wrexham AAC) won the 2,000m race walk in 10:17.02 with clubmate Ellis Jones second in a PB of 10:57.69. Jon Hancock (Oswestry Olympians) was third in 13:10.75.
NATIONAL ATHLETICS LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP ROUND THREE – ETON, AUGUST 22
Swansea Harriers were relegated back into the championship after finishing eighth on the day and eighth in the league overall at Eton on Saturday.
There were, however, a number of excellent performances from the likes of Transition Programme athlete Mike Jenkins and high jumper Sam Davies.
In the men’s discus, Jenkins claimed the significant scalp of Olympian Nick Percy. The Under-23 thrower, a World Para Athletics F38 shot put silver medallist, recorded a best of 55.25m to claim full points ahead of Percy (Harrow AC), who managed a best of 54.12m.
Davies took the honours in the men’s high jump competition with a best height of 2.11m, which matched that of Harrow’s Divin Duruaka (Harrow AC), but the Welshman got the nod on countback.
Following her appearance in the heptathlon at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Oregon, National Development Programme athlete Matilda Quick clocked 14.85 in the 100m hurdles and threw 11.40m in the shot put.
Elsewhere, Olympian Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) enjoyed a rare outing over 100m in the non-scoring heats. The 400m specialist won his race in 10.89. Brier also finished fourth in the men’s 200m in 21.44.
Jacob Parry picked up a second place for Swansea in the men’s 800m A race where he clocked 1:54.25. Brychan Price Davies enjoyed a similar result finishing second in the men’s 3,000m in 9:21.09.
NDP athlete Sophie Lisk was also second in the women’s 400m hurdles where she recorded 1:01.96.
The Premiership title was won by Thames Valley Harriers, for whom Transition Programme athlete Jessica Lee finished second in the women’s long jump with 5.90m and won the second string high jump with a best of 1.68m.
Also for TVH, Welsh thrower Cerys Aboagye placed third in the shot put with a best of 13.61m and NDP athlete Amelia Fettis was third in the hammer with 55.03m.
NATIONAL ATHLETICS LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WEST ROUND THREE – YEOVIL – AUGUST 22
There were a number of fine performances for the Cardiff club as they finished second overall on the day.
They included Mark Mellor soaring to a full 12 points in the men’s pole vault where he recorded a best of 5.48m.
Transition Programme multi eventer Lauren Evans won the women’s 100m hurdles in 15.07. Evans was well-employed on Saturday as she also finished third in the high jump with 1.58m, the long jump with 4.98m and the javelin with 30.60m.
There were A and B string victories in the men’s javelin where Joe Parker took the A string competition with 64.93m, while Richard Dangerfield’s 57.33m was the B string best.
On the track, Adam Kopp was one of a number of Cardiff winners as he claimed full points over 400m in 49.41, while a Cardiff team of Anna Watts, Sadie Graham-Mulvaney, Julia Teka and Charlotte Wingfield won the women’s 4x400m relay in 4:27.48.
ENGLAND ATHLETICS AGE GROUP COMBINED EVENT CHAMPIONSHIPS INCLUDING SENIOR PARA CHAMPIONSHIPS – BEDFORD, AUGUST 22 AND 23
National Development Programme multi-eventer Tiana Odugbesan (Cardiff Archers) won the women’s Under-18 heptathlon gold with a brilliant personal best-breaking performance.
Odugbesan claimed top spot on the podium with a total of 4955 points, which edged out Leila Newth (Ealing Southall and Middlesex AC) who amassed 4908. Another NDP athlete, Tabitha Ventress-Brett (Swansea Harriers) finished 13th with a new PB of 3584.
Odugbesan started her campaign with a new PB of 14.78 in the 100m hurdles before jumping a season’s best 1.54m in the high jump.
Next up was the shot put where Odugbesan produced the second longest effort of 11.87m.
Day one was rounded off with the 200m where the Welsh athlete once again produced the second best performance overall with a time of 25.53.
Day two started with Odugbesan measuring 5.48m in the long jump before launching the javelin out to a new personal best of 34.84m, which was the longest effort of the competition.
In the 800m, Odugbesan finished fifth overall in 2:32.43, which was enough to secure gold. Ventress-Brett also rounded off the competition well as she posted the third fastest time of 2:29.93, which was also a season’s best.
Welsh Commonwealth Games team captain Olivia Breen (City of Portsmouth) carried on her gold medal-winning form from Glasgow.
In the women’s para ambulant long jump, Breen leapt to 4.98m for 953 Raza points, which brought her victory ahead of Martina Rosie Barber, who registered 4.52m for 458 Raza points.
NDP thrower Jac Sheehan (Aberystwyth AC) won the seated discus with a new personal best of 23.44m, while he was second in the seated shot put with a best of 8.45m.
The men’s decathlon saw Thomas Webb (Newport Harriers) claim a new personal best of 4847 as he finished in 15th place.
ISLAND GAMES AND MENAI TRACK AND FIELD OPEN – BANGOR, AUGUST 22
Isaac Bromwich (Deeside AAC) produced a commanding performance in the Under-18 to senior javelin. The Under-20 athlete produced six throws over 55m – the longest of which was 60.45m. The next best performance came from Tomos Rigby (Menai Track and Field) with 24.93m.
In the Under-18 to senior discus, National Development Programme thrower Anabelle Jones (Wrexham AAC) threw a best of 30.75m, to give her victory over M60 athlete David Stokes (Deeside AAC) with 19.75m.
On the track, Oliver Nesbitt (Menai Track and Field) enjoyed a successful day winning the Under-18 men’s and women’s 100m in a new PB of 11.62 and the 200m in another PB of 23.73.
SILESIA DIAMOND LEAGUE – AUGUST 23
Charlotte Henrich (Invicta East Kent) continued her outstanding season by clocking new Welsh record over 300m, which is rarely run at senior level.
The Welsh Commonwealth Games athlete at European Championships silver medallist, clocked 35.92 as she finished second to Czech sprinter Lurdes Gloria Manuel, who won in 35.76.
The time puts Henrich third on the all time UK list for the distance behind Kathy Cook and Donna Fraser.
Jake Heyward (Cardiff Athletics) continued his comeback season with a sixth place finish in a stacked 1500m.
The line-up, which saw Heyward sporting his Welsh Commonwealth Games kit, included the likes of former World and Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and current Olympic champion Cole Hocker.
The Welsh record holder, who finished fourth at both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships earlier this summer, was in the mix throughout the race, sitting on Hocker’s shoulder in the early stages.
At the bell, Heyward who is returning after double Achilles surgery, was second behind Ingebrigtsen, but eventually crossed the line in sixth place, recording a season’s best time of 3:31.47.
The race was won by Ethan Strand of the USA in 3:30.77.
European 100m Silver medalist Jeremiah Azu was also in action in the Men's 100m running 10.26 in the round one heats
ANTRIM COAST HALF MARATHON – AUGUST 23
Wales had men’s and women’s teams running at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon on Sunday.
The first of the Welsh men’s team to finish was Samuel Roberts (Retford AC), who placed 24th in 1:05.43, just one place ahead of Sam Griffiths (Swansea Harriers), who clocked a personal best of 1:05.51. Christopher Thomas (Hercules Wimbledon) was 38th in 1:07.30. The results meant the men finished 5th overall in the team event.
In the women’s race, the first of the Welsh team to finish was Emily Marchant Pitt (Swansea Harriers), who was 15th in a PB of 1:15.23. Next home was Eden O’Dea (Deeside AAC) who finished 16th equalling her PB in 1:16.03. Emily Lowery (Vale Royal AC) was 25th in 1:19.03. The women also finished fifth.
BWYSTFIL Y BRYN/BEAST OF BRYN – PORT TALBOT, AUGUST 23
The event, which features races over 6.5 miles and 10.5 miles, is organised by the Bryn Residents Action Group.

TROTS ST CLEARS 10K – AUGUST 23
The men’s race was won by Ollie George (Sarn Helen) in 35:14 ahead of Jamie Parry in 36:04 and John Perkin (Amman Valley Harriers) in 36:23. The first female finisher was Layla Omar (Sarn Helen) in 41:28, ahead of Tifanie Lew (Amman Valley Harriers) in 41:46 and Grace Diana 46:22.
