WORLD ATHLETICS ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS – BUDAPEST, SEPTEMBER 11-13

Welsh Commonwealth Games athletes Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff Athletics) and Charlotte Henrich (Invicta East Kent) were part of the Great Britain team competing in the inaugural Ultimate Athletics Championships.

On the final evening of this new event on the athletics calendar, Henrich produced an outstanding final leg of the mixed 4x400m final to see the GB team finish second behind the United States.

When Henrich took the baton from team-mateToby Harries, GB were in fourth position and the Welsh record holder had to show some nifty footwork to sidestep the Dutch third leg athlete as she set off on her leg.

The 20-year-old, who has enjoyed a spectacular season, had soon overtaken her opposite numbers from Belgium and the Netherlands and showed great determination and strength to hold off their challenges and finish second in 3:09.40 behind the USA who clocked 3:08.32.

Henrich, who ran a split of 49.52, said of her performance:

“When you’re racing, you’re not thinking about much, you’re just racing. I think it’s easier in the relay, there’s less to think about, you just overtake somebody, you’re not even in your own lane.

“It’s kind of like you’re playing Mario Kart or something. I wasn’t thinking of much, but I was just trying to catch as much as possible. The Americans were amazing, so I couldn’t quite get there, but I knew what I could do.”

Azu was part of the first event at the new championships as he lined up for the mixed 4x100m relay.

Taking up the slightly unfamiliar role of running the third leg, the Olympic relay medallist took the baton from Imani-Lara Lansiquot before speeding around the bend and handing over to Success Eduan.

The Sale Harriers athlete brought the GB team home for a third place finish in 40.26. The title was won by the USA in 39.64 with Jamaica second in 39.72.

After running a split of 9.38, Azu said:

“The feeling when we walked out there and had this crowd and this energy at a new event was incredible.

“Any event athletes do, we want to win but you have got to respect the competition, and two teams ran better than we did but we enjoyed it."

On the second evening of the three-day competition, Azu lined up in the individual 100m final.

With only the very best athletes in the world taking part in each event, the Welshman was faced with a stern test to make the final.

And so it proved as Azu placed seventh in the first semi-final clocking a time of 10.13. The final was won by Kenny Bednarek, of the USA, in 9.85.
