Willis takes 3rd Cross Challenge Victory and Arter looks ahead to Lisbon

Liverpool Cross Challenge (incl Euro Cross Trials, Sefton Park, Liverpool – November 23

Last Saturday saw over 20 Welsh athletes compete in some very muddy conditions at the Liverpool Cross Challenge to try and book their seat on the plane to the Euro Cross Country Championships next month.

U20 Matthew Willis produced a dominant performance to win his third Cross Challenge and gain automatic selection to Lisbon next month. U23 women Bronwen Owen and Cari Hughes will be joining him after coming 1st and 2nd respectively.

 

Another automatic selection went to Charlotte Arter who finished 2nd behind Jess Judd in the senior women’s race. Teammate Jenny Nesbitt is hoping for selection also after her 6th place finish on the weekend.


In the Senior Men’s race, Kristian Jones made his Cross Challenge debut this year finishing 7th within a strong UK field.


There was also plenty of club representation from Carmarthen Harriers in the younger age groups with William Coles finishing 3rd in the U11 boys race, Iwan Thomas finishing 5th in U13 boys race and Frank Morgan finishing 5th in the U15 boys race.

 

In the U17 categories, there was another strong performance from U17W Welsh Inter-Regional Champion Samia Jones who finished 8th in her race representing Wales. Fellow clubmate Osian Perrin also had a good race finishing 11th in the U17 Men’s race.

Gloucester 10km, Gloucester – November 24

Jonathon Hopkins opted for the road of the cross this weekend and ran a dominant race at the Gloucester 10km to take the win in 29:27. He was followed by Peter Le Grice from Bristol & West AC in 29:53.

Carys Hughes from Cardiff AC was the first Welsh lady home in 36:02.
