Welsh Athletes set their sights on the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships this weekend in Sheffield

This weekend sees one of the largest university championships take place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships will see some of the top athletes in the country go head to head to battle it out for both a medal and valuable BUCS points for their university.
This year, we will be showing all the action on our facebook page via the BUCS livestream so you are able to follow or the Welsh athletes competing.
Several Welsh athletes have been selected to represent their individual institutions to compete at the event including Welsh thrower Adele Nicoll. After winning 4 consecutive outdoor titles and 3 indoor titles in the Shot Put, she is hoping to add another indoor title to her list. After showing consistent form, throwing just under 16m, she is looking strong to challenge for the gold again this year.
Lauren Evans, who finished just outside the medal positions last year, has already been showing good form ahead of the championships and is looking strong to take home a medal this year.
Joe Brier makes a return to Sheffield, after taking bronze back in 2018 in the 400m, in the hopes to challenge for a higher medal. After taking home the Scottish National Open gold medal last month, Joe is looking in good form to race his way through 3 rounds to take home gold.
2018 BUCS 60m Champion Hannah Brier has also returned to Sheffield this year but this time to challenge for a medal in the 200m. She is looking close to her personal best and is hoping to add the longer sprint distance to her short sprint title.
Last year’s bronze medallist in the 400m hurdles outdoors, Lauren Williams, has dropped the hurdles and is challenging over the flat in the hopes to add an indoor medal to her collection.
In the distance events, welsh runners Jonathon Hopkins and Oliver Barbaresi are both eyeing up medals in the 3,000m. Fresh off his Welsh Championship 1500m win, Hopkins set his fastest 1500m in 2 years and is looking in strong contention to challenge for the gold.
Remi Adebiyi has decided to swap his 3,000m distance for the faster 1500m in his first BUCS Championship event for Bath University. After finished 2nd in the 1500m at the Welsh Championships, just behind Jonathon Hopkins, last month, he will be hoping to perform well at the Championships.
