Weekend Round-Up Final - Competitions of the Track & Field Season

Following Friday nights successful return to road running with thre Sunset 5K - full report here: Road Racing Returns in Wales, the weekend saw the Track & Field season come to a close with Welsh athletes keen to have a well-deserved break after long season by finishing off with a bang before their gruelling winter season begins!
Senior Sprints Open
On Sunday 19th Sep 2020 sprinters took to the track to close their season off with the conditions in their favour. The wind was with the sprinters ranging from +2.8 - +6.8 so fast times were to be expected!
In the 100m Sprinter Sam Gordon (Matt Elias) continued his return from injury with a win running 10.26w which would have been a new PB, but a strong tailwind of +5.3 meant that it would not have counted as an legal time.
“I got myself ready for this one, hoping to finish off the season with something and just to run without feeling any pain, which is what I got today… with the year that it’s been with everything that’s happened, you’ve got to be happy with it. If that had been legal, I would have said ‘fair enough that’s not a bad run’!”

The fastest woman of the day was the youngster (U13G) Nell Desir (Lisa Waddon) running a blistering 12.07 wind aided which if legal would have put her 4th on the Welsh senior rankings (currently 5th).
The second fastest female 100m time of the day was clocked by another age-grade athlete, Carmarthen’s (U15G) sprinter Jessica Lea, whose 12.19 would have been a new PB but for the conditions.
Over to the 200m where there was a battle between the two of the top 400m runners in Wales, Joe Brier (Matt Elias) and Owen Smith (Matt Elias) vs on of the top short sprinters in Wales, Dan Beadsley (Dave Norton).
In fine fashion Joe Brier (Matt Elias) took the win in a blistering time of 20.87w which also would have stood a massive PB if it were not for the following wind on the day. Dan Beadsely (Dave Norton) took 2nd place in 21.27w and Owen Smith (Matt Elias) took 3rd in 21.32w.
The fastest female 200m time of the day was clocked by Cardiff’s Esther Adikpe (Dave Lease), who stopped the clock in 24.97, while in the same race club mate Rachel Donnison (Colin Bovell) ran 25.55.

Welsh Athletics Endurance Open Meeting
It was now the turn for the endurance athletes to close their T&F season in Swansea as they now prepare for their Road and Cross-Country season.
The day started off with the 3000m Walk race with (U16G) Gracie Griffiths taking the victory in a dominant performance in the event crossing the line in 15:40,60, with 2nd place Megan Stratton-Thomas (Martin Bell) crossing the line in 17:46,10 and 3rd Jemima Osborn finishing in 18:28,85.
In the 800m Theo Cheshire took the victory in similar dominant performance in taking the victory in 2:01,50 with 2nd place Nathan Phillips (Liz Davies) running 2:05,92 and Leo Stark (Darryn McAtee) coming 3rd in 2:09,35.
The 3000m was the next event on track with Mukhtaar Farhan taking the win in the 1st race again in another dominant performance winning in 8:49,99, with 2nd place Harry Davies running 9:02,43 and Rhys Hardman (James Thie) running 9:04,22 to come 3rd.
Kobe Beltran (Mark Gold) won the 2nd race in a winning time of 10:08,44, with Ifan Lloyd coming 2nd in 10:09,33 and Ifan Bowen (Neil Thomas) securing 3rd 10:22,90.
Abed Teweldebrhan (Michael Adams) won the final race of the 3000m in the fastest time of the day with 8:45,11 with 2nd place Alex Ridout (Steve Knight) running10:18,94 and Fiona Bostock coming 3rd in 10:45,11.
In the final event of the day the 1500m runners closed the event off in fine fashion. The top 5 performances came from Luke Williams (Steve Knight) running 4:03,84, Ben Miles (Steve Mitchell) running 4:07,23, David John Williams running 4:10,21, Joel Price (Mark Gold) running 4:17,57 and Callum Campion running 4:19,54.

Cheshire Half Marathon
On the 20th Sep 2020 Andrew Davies held off fellow Welshman Charlie Hulson and 2:10:03 Marathoner Jonny Mellor to win the Cheshire Half Marathon yesterday. Only two seconds separated the first four finishers which would have been a thrilling sprint finish!
