CHRISTLETON 5K – CHESTER, MAY 8

Rhodri Owen (Meirionnydd Running Club) won the men’s race at the Christleton 5K on Friday in 14:42. Clubmate Daniel Kashi was seventh in 15:08. Under-18 athlete Zac Campbell (Deeside AAC) was 11th in 15:14.

The top Welsh finisher in the women’s race was Heather Watson (Deeside AAC) who crossed the line in 17:11.

BELFAST CLASSIC – MAY 9

A number of Commonwealth Games hopefuls such as Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) and Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff Athletics) were among Welsh athletes to shine in Northern Ireland on Saturday.

Courtney-Bryant, a bronze medallist at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, won the women’s international 1500m in 4:04.50 – earning a Glasgow Commonwealth Games nomination A standard in the process.

A delighted Courtney-Bryant said afterwards:

I’m really happy, I came here with one job today – to get my Commies time for Team Wales. So, I’m really happy to tick that off.

Runner-up to Courtney-Bryant was fellow Welsh athlete Ava Lloyd (Wigan and District), who clocked 4:07.04.

In the men’s 200m, there was a blistering new personal best for Azu, who claimed victory in 20.73 to spearhead a Welsh clean sweep of the podium places.

Brother Alex Azu (Cardiff Athletics) finished second in 21.12 with club mate and fellow training group member Sam Gordon third in 21.33. Another Cardiff sprinter, Josh Brown, was seventh in 22.10.

Azu said afterwards:

It was smooth, I came off with a PB. I’m not sure what the wind was but it’s the best I’ve ever run so a good day, a good start for me.

Commenting on the Cardiff-based training group, Azu said:

We’ve got a huge bunch of younger talent coming through and I’m excited to see what they do. See who can transition onto the professional scene.

Earlier in the day a Cardiff team won the men’s 4x100m relay in 39.87.

Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers), who would be appearing in her third Commonwealth Games if nominated for Glasgow, won the women’s 100m A race in 11.54. Wales’ fastest ever woman over 100m earlier finished second in the 200m, clocking 23.75.

There was another outstanding Welsh performance in the women’s international 400m race.

Charlotte Henrich (Invicta East Kent), fresh from her exploits at the World Relay Championships in Botswana, won in a brilliant new PB of 51.24 – a Commonwealth Games B standard. Tess McHugh (Sale Harriers Manchester) was sixth in 53.68.

In the men’s international 400m, Olympian Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) finished third in 46.46.

There was success for Wales’s 400m runners in the mixed relay as the quartet dominated from the start to deliver the baton to the finish line in 3:18.45 – finishing five-and-a-half seconds ahead of their nearest rivals Scotland.

A fast men’s 800m international race saw Justin Davies (Team Bath) finish fourth in 1:46.52 in his first competitive outing of the year.

National Development Programme athlete Jack Organ (Brecon AC) finished third in the men’s 800m A race in 1:48.64, while Piers Copeland (Pontypridd Roadents) was fourth in the men’s international 1500m in 3:39.73.

FRANSON LAST CHANCE AND MULTIS – AZUSA, CALIFORNIA, MAY 9

Tokyo Olympian Jake Heyward (Cardiff Athletics) continued his remarkable comeback from injury in California.

At the Franson Last Chance and Multis meeting, Heyward ran a Commonwealth Games A standard as he finished second over 1500m.

Following an injury break of almost four years, Heyward ran 3:34.18 – his fastest time since finishing fifth in 1500m final at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

SOUTH/EAST WALES REGIONAL TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026 – ABERDARE, MAY 9

More than 350 athletes took part in the South Wales and East Wales Joint Regional Championships at the Ron Jones Stadium.

In the Under-18 women’s 3kg shot put, Grace Hawker took the win with a best of 13.81m ahead of fellow National Development Programme athlete and Cardiff Archers team-mate Tiana Odugbesan who threw 11.90m.

The Under-18 men’s 100m saw NDP athlete Finley Roynon (Cwmbran Harriers) claim a convincing win in 10.71.

NORTH WALES REGIONAL TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026 – BANGOR, MAY 9

More than 150 athletes took part in the North Wales Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Treborth Track in Bangor.

Amongst the stand out performers was National Development Programme thrower Annabelle Jones (Wrexham AAC) who won the Under-18 women’s hammer with a new personal best of 35.68m. Jones also won the Under-18 women discus with 32.84m.

Lucca Tardivel (West Cheshire Athletic Club) won the Under-18 100m in 11.32 and the 200m in 22.94.

In the Under-14 and Under-16 girls 800m Martha Bown (Menai Track and Field) won in 2:18.57 – more than six seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

SOMERSET COUNTY AA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

British Athletics World Class Programme F44 para athlete Bree Cronin (Cardiff Athletics) threw a season’s best 34.40m in the Under-18/Under-20 seniors and masters discus in Yeovil.

National Development Programme T37 para athlete Amirah Peckham (Newport Harriers) returned to competition for the first time since taking a sabbatical to finish her degree with a wind assisted 17.75 over 100m.

F56 NDP athlete Ellie Bowen (Cardiff Archers) launched a season’s best 17.51m to win the seated discus and a season’s best 6.72m to win the seated shot. Fellow NDP athlete Kieran Jones (Cardiff Archers) threw 7.82m in the men’s seated shot.

F37 para athlete Joe Symons (Cardiff Archers) threw a season’s best 8.96m in the Under-18/Under-20/senior/masters shot.

AJ BELL GREAT BRISTOL RUN – MAY 10

National Development Programme wheelchair racer Owain Terrell (Newport Harriers) continued his outstanding form despite crashing in Bristol on Sunday morning.

Terrell got back into his chair and continued, despite his tyre jamming, to win the race in 36:29.

BRYN MEADOWS CAERPHILLY 10K 2026 – MAY 10

A record number of runners took park in the town’s annual 2K and 10K races with more than 2,500 people hitting the streets.

In the men’s 10K race, Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) made it four wins in four attempts at Caerphilly.

Griffiths claimed the win in 30:04, ahead of club-mate Jonathon Butler in 30:19. Adam Bull (Pontypridd Roadents) was third in 31:22.

This year’s event was held over a new course, Griffiths commented:

It’s definitely quicker than it was.

Unfortunately, I’m not in the same shape I was when I ran the course record two years ago, but I enjoyed it – there’s always a good atmosphere going through the town.

The women’s 10K was won by Lauren Kennard (Worcester AC) in 35:48 with Donna Morris (Builth and District) second in 35:56 and Lizzie Dimond third in 37:05.

Kennard said afterwards:

The course was better this year because it was less hilly, so it was good fun. The atmosphere through town was incredible – there were so many people. It really helps.

The 2k boys’ race was won by Rory Collins (Newport Harriers) in 6:25. Alesha Santos (Rhondda AC) was the first girl to finish the race, crossing the line in third place overall in 6:44.

Among those taking part in the race away form the elite line-ups was former Arsenal and Wales football star Aaron Ramsey.

WEST WALES REGIONAL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026 – CARMARTHEN, MAY 10

The West Wales Athletics Championships attracted an entry of more than 350 athletes to Carmarthen Leisure Centre on Sunday.

Two of Wales and Great Britain’s top para athletes went head to head in the Under-18, Under-20 and senior men’s and women’s discus.

F38 thrower Michael Jenkins (Swansea Harriers) took the honours with a best of 56.66m, while F44 athlete and clubmate Harrison Walsh was just six centimetres behind with 56.60m.

The highest placed female competitors were National Development Programme and Carmarthen Harriers throwers Dolly Evans, who registered 34.53m and Summer Evans with 32.65m.

It proved to be a particularly successful day for 13-year-old Katriel Udoh (Swansea Harriers) who won the Under-16 100m final in 12.13, the Under-16 high jump with a best of 1.65m and the Under-16 girls and boys long jump with a best of 5.48m.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS – GLOUCESTER, MAY 10

National Development Programme thrower Williams Richards-Baldwin (Gloucester AC) continued his fine form with a double personal best.

Richards-Baldwin registered a new 5kg PB of 16.11m to finish second in the Under-14 and above shot put. The competition was won by fellow Welsh athlete Gareth Winter (Woodford Green Athletic Club with Essex Ladies) who threw 16.45m (7.26kg).

In the Under-14 and above discus, Richards-Baldwin threw a 1.5kg PB of 49.35m to take the win overall. Winter was second with 38.87m (2kg).

AVON COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS – YATE, MAY 10

National Development Programme wheelchair racer Toby Richardson (Yate and District AC) pushed 31.19 in the 200m and 18.01 in the 100m at the Afon County Championships.

SNOWDONIA HALF MARATHON – LLANRWST, MAY 10

The Snowdonia half marathon is reputed to be one of the toughest half marathons in the United Kingdom.

This year’s men’s race was won by Joseph Moores (Salford Harriers) in 1:14.33. Ed Slaughter (Porthcawl Harriers) was second in 1:21.09 with Chris Pownell (Cybi Striders/Vegan Runners) third in 1:25.05.

The top female finisher was Bethan Hague (Rhos on Sea), who broke the tape in 1:35.04. Next home was Margot Saher (Eryri Harriers) in 1:44.37 with Bethan Hughes (Wrexham AC) third in 1:44.33.

LLANGOLLEN TRAIL 10K – MAY 10

The off-road race claims to be the most beautiful 10K in the UK as it runs along the famous Llangollen Canal.

Winner of the men’s race was Steffan Sayer (Menai Track and Field), who recorded a time of 36:30. Next home was Richard Johnson (Altrincham and District AC) in 40:46, ahead of Jordan Atlee in 44:52.

Seren Cashen won the women’s race in 46:12 as she also finished sixth overall. Catrin Lederle was second in 48:04 with Lesley Heyes (Ramsbottom Running Club) third in 48:32.
