ENGLISH ROAD RUNNING ASSOCIATION NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS 2019, BIRMINGHAM, APRIL 6

A number of Welsh runners shone at the ERRA National Road Relays in Birmingham on Saturday afternoon. Former Welsh Cross Country Champion Bronwen Owen helped Leeds AC to the women's overall title by running the fastest Stage 2 time of the race, completing the 5k course in 17.22.

Swansea Harriers, featuring Verity Ockenden, Isobel Parry-Jones, Helen Marshall, Sian Edwards, Caryl Jones and Alaw Beynon Thomas finished sixth overall in a combined time of 2:14.51 - just over four minutes behind Leeds. Caryl Jones clocked the fastest Stage 5 time of 17:45. Les Croupiers RC finished 21st team home, led off by Tamara Beach who clocked 30.02 - the 9th fastest long leg of the day.

In the men's event, Cardiff AC led the field from the fourth stage until the eighth leg with Dan Nash and Ciaran Lewis amongst those running excellent legs. However, the Leeds men's team took over the lead and held on to complete the double ahead of Bristol and West AC in second and Aldershot Farmham and District AC in third. Swansea Harrier, Dewi Griffiths, registered the second fastest time of the day over the long 5.38-mile stage clocking in at 25:06. Pontypridd Roadents men's team came in 43rd. Aberdare Valley AC also took part.

CARLSBAD 5000, SAN DIEGO, APRIL 7

Cardiff's Charlotte Arter [Chris Jones] finished second in the women's race at the prestigious Carlsbad 5000 road race in San Diego on Sunday evening. Previous winners of the race billed as the fastest 5K in the world include Ethiopia's Olympic and World Championship 5,000m gold medallist and former world record holder Meseret Dafar and current world record holder Tirunesh Dibaba, who has won three Olympic and five World Championship golds.

Arter, who won the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K last weekend, clocked a time of 16:01 over the picturesque 5K seafront course, behind Kenya's Sharon Lokedi who won the race in 15:48. Worcester AC's Jenny Nesbitt [Chris Jones], who is in America on a Welsh Athletics endurance training camp alongside Arter, finished seventh in a time of 16:38.

In the men's race, previously been won by the likes of marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge, Cardiff's Jake Heyward also finished seventh in a time of 14:25, behind Kenyan winner Edward Cheserek who matched the IAAF 5k road world record of 13:29. Heyward's coach and Cardiff AC team-mate, James Thie, was triumphant in the men's Master's 40 and over race, winning in a time of 15:18.

PODEBRADY RACE WALKING COMPETITION, CZECH REPUBLIC, APRIL 6.

Pembrokeshire race walker Heather Lewis took 11 seconds off her 20k personal best at Podebrady where she clocked 95:04. The British Indoor 5,000m champion, who is enjoying an excellent season, goes fourth in the UK's all-time list over 20K.

DON KIRBY TAILWIND OPEN, ALBURQUERQUE, APRIL 6.

University of New Mexico student Iolo Hughes won the 800m at the Don Kirby Open, in a season's best time 1:58.98. Hughes, from Anglesey, also finished second in the 1500m, in a time of 4:03.32.
