Welsh Indoor U13/U17/U20 Championships 

The weekend saw the return of the Welsh Indoor Junior Championships. 

Highlights on Day 1 included a trio of gold medals for Luca Phillips (Cardiff Archers) as he took victory in the U17 men’s triple jump, 60m hurdles and 60m while cementing his place at the top of the UK rankings in the U17 triple jump. Aharon Mulvaney (Cardiff Athletics) and Charlie Shuall (Swansea Harriers) set huge new personal bests in the U20 men’s Pole Jump, while Menna Grant (Cardiff Archers) set a new Welsh Record of 8.59 seconds in the U17 women’s 60m and Owen Garrat (Yate & District) took a dominant win in the U17 men’s shot put with a huge throw of 14.76m, 3m further than the silver medal position.  

The action and exciting competition continued on Day 2: 

In the U17 men’s long jump, Phillips extended his record and achieved the U18 European qualifying standard with a jump of 7.36m. Jac Sheehan (DSW Sports Academy), added the U17 men’s seated shot title to his collection as he threw 8.17m, adding to the Senior title he had won just a week earlier. Amelia Williams (Carmarthen and District Harriers) finished close to the Championship Best Performance in the U17 women’s 3000m with 10:09:45. Jacob Barnes (Cardiff Athletics) also completed the impressive feat of a hat-trick of titles, winning the U13 long jump, 60m and 200m.

BUCS Cross Country Championships 

Student athletes from around the UK converged on Temple Newsam Park in Leeds for the much-anticipated BUCS Cross-Country Championships. Standout performances included three top ten finishes from Welsh Athletes with Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers/Oxford University) leading home in 5th, followed by Dafydd Jones (Swansea Harriers/Cardiff University) in 7th and Ciaran Lewis (Les Croupiers/Cardiff University). In the Women’s Long Race Beth Rawlinson (Oxford University/Wolverhampton and Bilston) came in 25th place.

Meyo Invitational 

Amber Simpson (Wrexham/Illinois Uni) put in a strong performance to break 22m in the Women’s weight throw. Her throw of 22.01m also marked a new personal best!

IFAM Indoor Ghent 

Piers Copeland (Pontypridd Roadents) travelled to Belgium and ran 3:43:13 to cross the line in front in the Men's 1500m at the indoor meeting in Ghent.

Loughborough Indoor Open 

In the women’s 60m, Kelly Constable (Cardiff Archers) ran a season’s best of 8.00. Olivia Breen (City of Portsmouth) ran 8.31, matching the time she ran in Cardiff the week before. Lauryn Davey (Swansea Harriers) ran 8.88 over the women’s 60m hurdles and also jumped 5.41m in the women’s long jump final.  

Also, in the 60m, Welsh Champion Dewi Hammond (Cardiff Athletics) ran a season’s best of 6.75.

Thomas Walley (Wrexham AAC) returned to action in the men's pole vault, vaulting 5.02 metres for joint 2nd place.

New Balance Indoor Grand Prix 

Racing alongside a stacked field, Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) set a new Welsh Record in the Women’s 3000m with 8:37:74, improving on her own record of 8:38:22 set at Glasgow in 2019, to mark an impressive start to the year!

Les Croupiers Handicap 10  

The Les Croupiers Handicap 10-mile event returned for another year, having been run every year since the club's formation in 1981, with its unique format. James Sullivan crossed the finished line first closely followed by Karen Chadwell.

Pontypridd Reverse 10 

Jacob Tasker (Ogmore Phoenix) crossed the line in front in the men’s race in a time of 52:45, followed by Andy Gardiner (San Domenico RC) and Dane Williams (Parc Bryn Bach RC). In the women’s race, Emily Fell (CDF Runners) came home in front in a time of 1:03:26, followed by Sarah Howard (Port Talbot Harriers) and Sharon Leech (Swansea Harriers).
