CARDIFF HALF MARATHON (INCLUDING THE WELSH HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS) – OCTOBER 4

Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei set a new course record to win the women’s elite race at the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday.

With more than 25,000 runners taking to the streets of the capital, Gideon Kiprotich made it a Kenyan double by winning the men’s race.

The Welsh Half Marathon Championships saw Lloyd Sheppard-Brown (Cardiff Athletics) run away with the men’s title on his first venture over the distance, while Great Britain international Natasha Wilson comfortably claimed the women’s title.

Jepkosgei, who had already won the London, New York and Valencia marathons, was also in excellent form here as she led the elite women’s field home in 1:05.40.

The winning time slashed 12 seconds of Edith Chelimo’s course record which was set back in 2017.

Ethiopia’s Wede Kefale was second in 1:05.54 with compatriot Tigist Tesema third in 1:07.23.

Jepkosgei was full of praise for the course and the huge Welsh crowd lining the streets after the race:

“It was a tough course but I kept fighting so I’m happy to get the victory here.

“I enjoyed it out there but there were some hills, especially near the end, which made it tough, but coming down the last straight and getting the win was special.

“The crowds were some of the most excited I have seen and they were across the whole course, which gave me another level of motivation. I will enjoy this win now and recover.”

In the men’s race, Kiprotich, held off the challenge of last year’s champion Yismaw Dillu to win in 59:34. Ethiopian Dillu clocked 1:00.18, while Jonah Rutio (Bahrain) was third in 1:01.13.

Kiprotich said of his victory:

“It feels great to win this race, there were some hard moments, but I am very happy to win.

“I felt good so I got quicker in the second half of the race and I am happy I could keep the pace to win. I enjoyed the crowds too, it was a good day.”

The domestic honours in the men’s race went to Sheppard-Brown, who followed up his recent Cardiff 10K victory by winning the Welsh Half Marathon title.

The 23-year-old Cardiff AC athlete took the crown ahead of second-placed Dan Nash (Pontypridd Roadents), marking his first start over the distance with a Welsh triumph in 1:03:41. Great Britain international Nash clocked 1:05.20 with Dylan Nazareth (Les Croupiers) third in 1:07.44.

Sheppard-Brown said:

“It’s nice to be back home racing after a few years in America and to win the Welsh title is pretty special.

“I was talking to my mam about when I won the junior 2K race here a few years ago now, so it’s a special moment to be the fastest Welshman here.

“It means so much, my friends and family were supporting me, and the crowds were absolutely incredible.”

The women’s Welsh Half Marathon Championship was won by Wilson in 1:10:34, six weeks after finishing fifth in the marathon at the European Championships in Birmingham, leading Great Britain to a team gold medal.

Wilson, who finished sixth overall in the elite women’s race, finished comfortably ahead of the next best Welsh finisher, Kayley Price (Newport Harriers), who claimed silver in 1:14:03, with Naomi Sutton earning bronze in 1:17.50.

Former Welsh marathon record holder Wilson said:

“It’s really nice to pick up the Welsh title as I’m just at the start of a new training block after the European Championships.

“It was tough but I really enjoy coming here for my home race. I would like to see my performances go under that 70-minute mark as I get closer to the Valencia Marathon, but I’m really happy with today’s result.”

The wheelchair race saw Welsh Athletics National Development Programme racer Owain Terrell (Newport Harriers) finish fourth in 1:15.32. The race was won by Poland’s Sam Kolek (Kirby AC) in 53:05.

The 23rd edition of the event saw more than 30,000 people register across the weekend, which included a number of junior races.

The half marathon, which is part of the SuperHalfs Series alongside races in Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen and Valencia, saw more than 5,700 international participants from 99 countries register to take part – its highest ever. Around 10,500 runners were on their SuperHalfs journey with 700 people completing the series in Cardiff this year.

Steve Brace, Events Director at Run 4 Wales, said:

“This year has seen thousands of runners take part in the Cardiff Half with our highest ever number of international athletes and even a new course record set in the women’s race.

“We’d like to thank all of our sponsors, charities and volunteers for their support and look forward to coming back to the city in 2027.”
