RUN WITH THE WIND AND PARA EVENTS 1 – CARDIFF, MAY 21

The first Run with the Wind meeting of the year saw a number of outstanding performances and personal bests at the Cardiff International Sports Campus.

A number of sprinters excelled again just days after impressing for Wales at the Loughborough International last weekend.

Great Britain international Sam Gordon (Cardiff Athletics) continues to get faster this year as he posted a season’s best 10.42 - the fastest 100m time of the evening.

Just a fraction behind him was Lewis Stephens (Cardiff Athletics), who excelled in the Great Britain Under-20 vest at Loughborough.

Back on home ground, the Welsh Athletics National Development Programme athlete claimed a new personal best of 10.44.

It was a good night for Cardiff Athletics sprinters as Alex Azu registered a season’s best 10.56 and Luca Logue Fonseca clocked a new PB of 10.60.

The Cardiff club’s success extended to the women’s 100m where NDP athlete Jessica Mantle was the fastest female on the night clocking 12.00.

Clubmate Issie Tustin registered 12.24 and fellow NDP athlete Nell Desir (Cardiff Archers) crossed in 12.36.

There was a PB of 12.83 for promising NDP multi-eventer Tianna Odugbesan (Cardiff Archers).

In the 100m para race, T37 NDP athlete Tomi Robers-Jones (Newport Harriers) celebrated a season’s best of 13.70.

Another NDP athlete, Lucas Salvage (Newport Harriers) ran a new PB of 50.58 as he won the 400m. Sarah Coote (Cardiff Athletics) was the fastest woman with 59.87.

In the 200m, Eli Onyewu (Swansea Harriers) ran a new PB of 21.55, while Welsh Athletics Transition Programme sprinter Joseph Berry (Newport Harriers) ran a new season’s best 21.96.

Following her excellent performance as part of the victorious Welsh mixed 400m relay team at the Loughborough International, Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers) ran the fastest female 200m time of the night with 23.92.

The next fastest time came from under-20 athlete Millie Webb (Cardiff Athletics), who claimed a new PB of 24.72.

In the under-15 and under-17 women’s 300m, Lois Codling (Newport Harriers) posted the fastest female time of the night with a new PB pf 41.11. Tobias Evans (Cardiff Athletics) was the fastest under-15 boy with 39.00.

NDP wheelchair athlete Owain Terrell (Newport Harriers) continued his outstanding season in the first event of the evening.

Terrell, who has been excelling over 5k and 10k on the roads this season, switched to the track with great success, winning over 100m in 18.20.

NAIA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2025 – INDIANA, MAY 21-23

Bryn Woodall (Colwyn Bay/Milligan College) became NAIA 1500m national champion, claiming the title with a personal best of 3:41.93.

Woodall was also part of the Milligan Buffalos 4x800m national championships winning team.

Ellen Mary Kearney (Warriors/Milligan College) finished second in the women’s 1500m national championships in 4:23.10.

WACT ZAGREB – BORIS HANZEKOVIC MEMORIAL – MAY 22-24

Justin Davies (Team Bath) continued his outstanding start to the season in Zagreb on Thursday.

Having set a new 800m Welsh record of 1.44:35 in his first outdoor race of the season, Davies ran his second fastest ever time as he took the win in Zagreb over a quality international field, stopping the clock in 1:44.87.

At the same meeting, Isabelle Boffey (Enfield and Haringey) ran her first outdoor race of the season over 800m, finishing second to Slovenia’s Anita Horvat in 2:02.09.

HALLESCHE WERFERTAGE – GERMANY, MAY 23 – 25

Freya Jones (Harrow) celebrated a big new national javelin record as a number of Welsh athletes competed in the prestigious competition in Germany.

Jones improved her own Welsh record of 53.74, which she set in Loughborough last year, by throwing 55.28m to finish seventh in a high quality field.

Elsewhere, Patrick Swan (Cornwall AC) recorded a season’s best of 18.04m in the men’s shot put, while in the women’s event Adele Nicoll (Birchfield Harriers) recorded a best of 16.58m.

In the men’s under-23 discus, Welsh Athletics Transition Programme athlete Michael Jenkins (Swansea Harriers) finished third with a best of 55.58m, beating competition-leading European rankings in poor conditions.

Paralympic and Commonwealth Games athlete Harrison Walsh, who is part of the Paralympic World Class Programme, finished seventh with a DT2K personal best 51.84m.

WORLD PARA ATHLETICS NOTTWIL GRAND PRIX 2025 – SWITZERLAND, MAY 23-25

Welsh Athletics National Development Programme T54 athlete Toby Richardson (Yate) spent a week in Switzerland being internationally classified and competing against some of the world’s best athletes.

At 15-years-old, Richardson was the youngest of 38 athletes competing, placing first in the 100m, second over 800m and third over 400. The youngster celebrated PBs in the 400m and 800m.

Next week, Richardson will be competing at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial and the Swiss Nationals in Arbon, one of the fastest tracks in the world.

Also at Notwill, Transition Programme T11 sprinter James Ledger (Swansea Harriers) finished second over 100m, clocking 12.05.

COMEBACK 5000 – BATTERSEA PARK, LONDON, MAY 23

Welsh Athletics National Development Programme athlete Daf Jones (Swansea Harriers) finished 14th in the Elite Men’s race in 13:55.94.

In the women’s elite race, Beth Kidger (Brighton Phoenix) finished ninth in a tactical race, clocking 16:15.64.

MID CHESHIRE 5K (SPRING) 2025 – RUNCORN, MAY 23

Welsh Athletics National Development Programme athlete Heather Watson (Deeside AAC) finished 14th in the women’s race with a chip time of 17.10, which is a new personal best.

Meanwhile, Rhodri Owen (Meirionnydd Running Club) was the first Welshman to cross the line in 5th place, clocking 14.33.

SOUND RUNNING TRACK FEST – LOS ANGELES, MAY 24

Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) smashed her own Welsh 5,000m record in Los Angles on Saturday night.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist improved the record she set in Stockholm back in 2019 by more than five-and-a-half seconds.

Having led going into the final stages of the race, the UK Athletics World Class Programme Athlete eventually crossed the line in second place behind Australia’s Linden Hall in a superb time of 14:48.20.

As well as breaking the Welsh record, the time gives Courtney-Bryant the qualifying standards for both the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year and next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

At the same event, Welsh Athletics performance programme athlete Piers Copeland (Pontypridd Roadents) ran 3.37.23 as he finished seventh in his first outdoor 1500m of the season.

WACT BRONZE EA - IFAM OUTDOOR – BRUSSELS, MAY 24-25

Having set the Welsh mixed 4x400m relay squad on their way to a spectacular victory at the Loughborough International last weekend, Evan Blackman (Corby) enjoyed individual glory in Belgium.

The Dai Greene coached athlete produced a huge new personal best of 45.80 as he raced to victory – slashing more than a second and a half off his previous best set in April last year. The time gives Blackman the Commonwealth B standard for next year’s Glasgow games.

In the women’s 400m events, Tess McHugh (Sale Harriers, Manchester), who was also part of the Welsh mixed 4x400m team, finished sixth in her race clocking 53.02.

Over the longer distances, Welsh Athletics Transition Programme athlete Osian Perrin (Menai Track and Field) clocked 3:40.79 – the 16th fastest senior time overall.

Under-20 National Development Programme athlete Henry Evans (Cardiff Athletics) ran a 1500m PB of 3:54.54.

TROFEO NASEGO (WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING ASSOCIATION WORLD CUP EVENT) – ITALY, MAY 24

A Welsh team competed at the WMRA Mountain Running Club event in Italy over the weekend.

In the uphill only race on Saturday, Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers) finished 25th, while in the women’s race, Eden O’Dea (Deeside AC) finished 33rd.

On Sunday, the up and downhill race saw O’Dea finish 22nd, with Beth Rawlinson (Wolverhampton and Bilston) 30th and Lucy Williamson (Mynydd Du) 37th.

In the men’s event, Wood was 41st with Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) 42nd and Gavin Roberts (Eryri Harriers) 44th.

Wales finished fifth overall in the Six Nations team results, with hosts Italy taking the honours overall.

BMC GRAND PRIX – WORLD ATHLETICS CHALLENGER – BURY, MAY 24

In the women’s 800m, under-17 athlete Lois Codling (Newport Harriers) finished fourth in 2:11.61, which is a consideration standard for the Welsh Athletics National Development Programme.

The men’s 800m D race saw Thomas Loynes (Neath Harriers) finish third in a new personal best of 1:52.27.

B&S KURPFALZ GALA – WEINHEIM, GERMANY, MAY 24

Transition Programme athlete Hannah Lake (Cardiff Athletics) finished joint fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.71m in Germany on Saturday.

BLCF HURDLES FEST – CHELMSFORD, MAY 24

There were two excellent times posted by National Development Programme multi-eventer Tiana Odugbesan (Cardiff Archers) in Chelmsford – 11.92 and 11.68, which is a new personal best.

CAMPEONATO ESPANA CLUBES DH HOMBRES LIGA JOMA J2 – HUESCA, SPAIN, MAY 24

Dewi Hammond (Cardiff Athletics) ran 10.57 as be raced to victory over 100m in Spain on Saturday.

STRATFORD SPEED TRACK OPEN – LONDON, MAY 26

Sam Gordon (Cardiff Athletics) once again lowered his season’s best as he clocked 10.34 in his wind assisted first round run at Newham on Bank Holiday Monday. In his second round heat, Gordon posted a time of 10.36.

Following his personal best in Cardiff, the previous week, Lewis Stephens ran 10.57 into a slight wind as he won his first round heat. The second round saw him win again and register 10.49 – just outside his PB.

Club-mate Josh Brown clocked 10.92, while Eli Onyewu (Swansea Harriers) ran 10.72 to finish third in his first round heat before going on to run 10.78 in the second round.

William Hawker (Swansea Harriers) won his heat in 10.88 – just outside his personal best. Hawker then ran 10.75 in his second round heat, but with a tailwind of 3.7. Zach Price (Liverpool Harriers) finished second in his heat in 10.84 and clocked 10.85 in the second round.

Issie Tustin (Cardiff Athletics) ran a season’s best 12.10 in the women’s 100m first round and then celebrated a new PB of 11.89 as she finished runner-up in her second round heat.

Transition Programme multi-eventer Grace Morgan (Cardiff Archers) clocked 12.49 in the first round and 12.65 in the second. Sadie Graham-Mulvaney (Cardiff Athletics) clocked 12.84.

In the women’s 200m heats, Tustin ran 25.45, while Graham-Mulvaney ran 27.31.

There was a Welsh one-two in the women’s 400m where Commonwealth Games athlete Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers) won in 53.66, ahead of Sian Harry (Belgrave Harriers) who crossed the line in 54.37.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 400m, Olympian Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) finished third in 47.33.
