TONYPANDY TRACK CLASSIC – AUGUST 23

More than 200 athletes travelled to the King George VI Athletics Track for an evening of athletics and entertainment on and off the track.

The Tonypandy Track Classic promises fast racing against a backdrop of music and food.

Once again, it didn’t disappoint with races ranging from 1,000m to 5,000m, including elite events.

The meeting kicked off with seven age grade 1,000m races which attracted 52  male and female athletes aged between under-13 and under-17.

The fastest male and female under-17 times of the evening were recorded by George Turner (Cardiff Athletics) and Poppy Oliver (Newport Harriers) with 3:14.54.

But there were some outstanding runs from the younger athletes included an eye-catching 3:00.40 by under-11 boys athlete Jacob Moss (Cardiff Athletics), which was the second fastest time of the night.

Under-13 girls competitor Gwen Hayes (Deeside AAC) also impressed with a time of 3:07.71 – the fifth fastest time overall. Hayes was closely followed by under-15 athlete Bella Thie (Bridgend AC), who clocked a PB of 3:08.12 and twin sister Ella (also Deeside AAC), who clocked 3:09.19.

The under-15 boys 3,000m Welsh Championship race was won by Nate Greig (Bridgend AC) in 9:17.61, while the girls title was claimed by Lyle Jonsson (Swansea Harriers) with 10:53.85.

The under-17/under-20 women’s 3,000m Welsh Championship race was won by under-17 athlete Rebecca Harries (Cardiff Athletics) in 10:08.09. The first under-20 athlete home was Imogen Jones (Rhymney Valley AC) in 10:53.87.

First home in the men’s under-17/under-20 Welsh Championship race was Welsh Athletics National Development Programme under-20 athlete Iwan Thomas (Carmarthen Harriers) in 8:52.10. The first under-17 finisher was Zac Campbell (Deeside AAC) in 9:18.35.

A series of four graded 5,000m races saw an entry of 51 athletes. The fastest men’s time was clocked by Kadar Omar (Birchfield Harriers) who ran a new personal best of 13:41.93 to finish ahead of Great Britain international Jake Smith (Pontypridd Roadents) in 13:43.94.

The fastest woman home was another GB competitor Hannah Irwin (Cambridge and Coleridge AC) who celebrated a PB of 15:24.71. The next fastest female was under-35 competitor Gabriella Booth (Porthcawl Runners) who clocked 18:19.49.

The evening’s racing was rounded off with two elite 1,000m events.

The women’s race was won by Anna Connor in 2:44.97 ahead of Molly Butterworth (Doncaster Athletic Club) in 2:51.36. Third place went to NDP under-17 athlete Bryony Boyce who crossed the line just behind Butterworth in 2:51.64.

The final race of the night, the elite men’s 1,000m, was won by another NDP athlete Jack Organ (Brecon AC) in 2:22.63. Second was Darge Minors (Bristol and West AC in 2:23.30 ahead of Archie Walton (Hercules Wimbledon AC) in 2:41.51.

BMC REGIONAL RACES – BURY, AUGUST 24

A number of Welsh athletes took place in the British Milers’ Club (BMC) Regional Races at Bury.

Chris Williams (Newport Harriers/Thames Valley) won the men’s mile B race in a new PB of 4:18.45. Cai Lewis (Millfield School) was second in a PB of 4:22.25.

Craig Williams (Newport Harriers) was fifth in the 800m C race in a new PB of 1:52. 64. Brychan Price Davies (Swansea Harriers) also celebrated an 800m PB in the D race where he clocked 1:55.36.

CILCAIN MOUNTAIN RACE INC WELSH MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS (SHORT) – CLWYDIAN RANGE, NORTH WALES, AUGUST 25

Eden O’Dea (Deeside AAC) continued her excellent recent form as she won the women’s Welsh Short Mountain Running Championship title on a hot and sunny Bank Holiday Monday.

Earlier in the week, the under-23 athlete was named in the Great Britain team for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Spain. Second place went to Joanne Henderson with Bethan Logan third.

The men’s race was won by World Athletics Championships marathoner Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers). Second was Rhys Goodrick with Rhys Jones third.

Both the men’s and women’s team races were won by north Wales. In the men’s race south Wales were second and east Wales third. Second in the women’s competition was East Wales.

CARDIFF PENARTH RUN (CPR)

The Cardiff Penarth Run took place this weekend in Bute Park.
