ABP NEWPORT MARATHON, HALF, 10K AND JUNIOR RACES – APRIL 19

The biggest ever ABP Newport Marathon witnessed more than 10,500 people sign up to take part and some outstanding performances in the elite races.

Leading the way was Commonwealth Games marathoner and Welsh Athletics Performance Programme athlete Natasha Wilson (Mickey Morris Racing Team) who broke the women’s half marathon course record by more than six minutes.

In excellent running conditions, Wilson broke the tape in 1:11.17 to smash the course record of 1:17:53 set last year by Grace Leyland (Herne Hill Harriers).

Wilson said:

I probably set out a bit fast, but I felt really comfortable. I always love coming back here as I feel so at home and the crowds are always amazing. Miles 6-10 felt a little bit lonely, but it was a hard training run, and I was very familiar with the roads and it was just great to be back home.

The former Welsh marathon record holder, who will represent Great Britain at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham this summer, said Sunday’s run was part of her first week of the marathon training block build.

She added:

Today was a training run on the back of a 100-mile week, so I’m really happy with this half marathon and the build. I’ve got 17 weeks to go and I’m really looking forward to it.

Second place went to Rebecca Ezra (Tamar Trotters) in 1:17.44 with Georgia Palmer (Les Croupiers) third in 1:20.36.

The men’s half marathon witnessed a thrilling finish with Adam Bowden (Bridgend Athletics) and Joel Redman (Cardiff Athletics) running side by side during the final 200m.

But it was Bowden, who just edged victory in 1:09.57 – with the same time being clocked by Redman. Lewis Munro was third in 1:10.09.

Bowden said afterwards:

Today was up and down and there was a bit of doubt, but you always have to think to yourself ‘how much do you want it?’, so I dug deep.

I’m absolutely blown away to win as I don’t do any specific sessions any more, I just run because I enjoy running. It’s just years and years of experience and I had to use that today.

The day after winning the wheelchair race at the Bristol Track Club 5K, Owain Terrell (Newport Harriers) took the crown in the wheelchair half marathon, breaking the 60 minute mark and setting himself a new PB with a time of 59:08.

The men’s marathon was won by Jacob Tasker (Bridgend Athletics), who was the clear winner in 2:21.07, ahead of Matt Wood (Herne Hill Harriers) in 2:23.34 and Tom Roberts (Meironnydd RC) in 2:24.13.

Commenting on his victory, which also brought him the Welsh marathon title, Tasker said:

Trails are my forte, so it was a little bit strange today, I was waiting for a hill just to get a little bit of a break, but the bridge at the end offered a little bit of that.

It was a brilliant course and perfect conditions today – the support was amazing and the crowds really got you going, so thank you to everyone who came out to support.

The women’s marathon was won by Samantha Antell (Bideford AC) in 2:43.15, ahead of Sarah Semmens (Long Eaton RC) in 2:54.50.

The first Welsh athlete home was Emily Fell (Les Croupiers), who finished third in 2:56.18 to claim the Welsh women’s marathon title.

The honours in the 10K races went to Dafydd Jones (Swansea Harriers) and Donna Morris (Builth and District), who won the men’s and women’s titles respectively.

Jones crossed the line in 29:24 ahead of Jon Butler (Swansea Harriers) in 29:56 and Sam Griffiths (Les Croupiers) in 30:07.

After the race, Jones said:

It’s the first race I’ve done individually in a while, as I’ve been doing a couple of the road relays in the last couple of weeks with the Swansea Harriers lot, so it was nice to come out here today and do a hard road race before I roll into my track season. It’s been a great event and I’m super happy to take the win today.

Morris claimed her victory in 35:43, with Emily Davies (Neath Harriers) second in 35:58 and Alison McEwing (Erme Valley Harriers) third in 36:02.

The Builth and District runner said of her win:

It was nearly perfect conditions out there, it was pretty hot up until the 5K but I took some water on and then threw it on my head and then the second half was a bit cooler.

It was a fantastic race and I’m completely over the moon to win as I thought on paper I would have come about fourth, so I’m really pleased with that.

There were also future challenger races for promising under-12 and under-16 runners as well as a fun run.

Nate Greig (Bridgend) won the Under-16 boys race in 4.30, while Alesha Santos (Rhondda AAC) won the girls race in 5:29.

The under-12 boys race was won by Alfie Maidment (Cardiff Athletics) in 5:28, while the girls race was won by Ivy Vaughan (Cwmbran Harriers).
