ULTRA TRAIL SNOWDONIA – MAY 17
Hugely versatile Wales and Great Britain international Kris Jones (Swansea Harriers) won the 50k race in Snowdonia on Saturday.
Jones, who has excelled across a phenomenal range of distance disciplines, ranging from the track to orienteering during an outstanding career, claimed the win in 5 hours 33.22.
The Ultra Trail Snowdonia is part of the UTMB World Series and hosted 25km, 100km and 100 mile races in addition to the 50km event.
CADER IDRIS MOUNTAIN RACE – DOLGELLAU, MAY 17
Cader Idris Mountain Race, is one of the toughest in the UK, it starts and finishes from the town of Dolgellau. The distance is approximately 10.5miles with 2927ft of climbing.
This year’s men’s race was won by Henry Ruddell (Pudsey and Bramley AC) in 1:18.49 ahead of Gavin Roberts (Calder Valley Fell Runners) in 1:30.43 and David Lawson (Shettleston Harriers) 1:32.24.
The women’s race was won by Megan Mitchell, nee Carter-Davies, (Swansea Bay Orienteering Club) in 1:35.56, ahead of Ruth Calcraft (Run Free Fell Runners) in 1:53.53 and Katie Ironside (Mynyddwyr De Cymru) in 1:56.41.
The race was also a Welsh team trial with Gavin Roberts and Megan Mitchell coming out on top.
SATURDAY THROWS LEAGUE TWO – ABERDARE, MAY 17
In the men’s and women’s mixed hammer, there were two National Development Programme athletes going head to head.
And it was Evie Cooper (Cardiff Athletics) who came out on top with a best of 54.82m, with Amelia Mitchell (Neath Harriers) second with 48.25m
LOUGHBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL ATHLETICS – MAY 18
There was a large Welsh presence at the annual Loughborough International Athletics meeting on Sunday.
As well as a strong Welsh team, there were also a number of representatives in the Great Britain Juniors team and the various guest races.
Among the Welsh highlights was Abi Pawlett’s individual win in the 100m hurdles as well as a spectacular victory in the mixed 4x400m relay.
Jack Organ, representing GB Juniors, also enjoyed an eye-catching win in the men’s 800m match race.
LOUGHBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL REPORT
AJ BELL GREAT MANCHESTER 10K & HALF MARATHON – MAY 18
Commonwealth Games athlete Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) finished eighth in the men’s race on the streets of Manchester, clocking a time of 29.10.
The first female Welsh athlete home was fellow Commonwealth Games competitor Jenny Nesbitt (Pontypridd Roadents), who was 13th in 33:51. Paris Olympian Clara Evans (Pontypridd Roadents) was 15th in 34.02.
In the half marathon, Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) had another fantastic run following his win at the Manchester Marathon last month. Griffiths came in 2nd place in 01:06:21
Eden O'dea (Deeside AAC) also had a stellar performance in the women's half, setting a new PB of 1:20:49 and taking third place on the podium.
BRITISH MILERS CLUB MILLFIELD PB CLASSIC – STREET, MAY 18
A number of Welsh Athletics National Development Programme athletes enjoyed successful trips to Somerset.
Lucas Salvage (Newport Harriers) bagged a new personal best as he finished fifth in the 800m A race in 1:54.23.
Likewise, George Turner (Cardiff Athletics) enjoyed a PB of 1:58.15 as he won the 800m B race.
Welsh Under-23 athlete Dion Griffith (Meirionnydd) was second in the 3,000m in a new PB of 8:24.29, while under-17 NDP athlete Tom Garrod (Newport Harriers) was 16th in a new PB of 8:54.89.
Anna-Rose Marchant (Cardiff Athletics) was second in the 800m women’s A race in 2:12.12.
In the 1500m mixed C race, Millie Pierce (Swansea Harriers) was the first female to finish and the fourth athlete overall as she posted a new PB of 4:43.21. The A and B races were male only. Lucy Bickerton (Yeovil) won the 1500m mixed D race in 4:47.90.
Under-17 NDP athlete Rebecca Harries (Cardiff Athletics) finished 10th in a new PB of 9:55.00 in the 3,000m B race.
BE FIT FOR TODAY TRACK ACADEMY – LEE VALLEY, MAY 18
Among the Welsh athletes competing in London was Issie Tustin (Cardiff Athletics) who equalled her PB of 11.94 who won her heat in the first round of the women’s 100m in London.
Sian Harry (Belgrave Harriers), normally a 400m specialist, claimed a big PB of 12.25 as she won her 100m first round heat. Non Elen Redvers Jones (Menai Track and Field) also equalled her PB as she finished third in 12.48.
Harry later clocked a new 200m PB as she won her heat in 24.58 ahead of Tustin who clocked 24.99.
In the men’s 100m first round, Aharon Graham-Mulvaney (Cardiff Athletics) won his heat in 11.40. Owain Lloyd Hughes (Neath Harriers) was fourth in his heat in 10.68. Hughes later ran 10.61 in round two. Graham Mulvaney went on to clock 52.99 in a 400m heat.
WEST WALES JUNIOR LEAGUE 1 – BRECON, MAY 18
Almost 250 young athletes took part in the West Wales Junior Open in Brecon on Sunday.
Among the many impressive performers was 12-year-old Poppy Brannigan (Swansea Harriers) who was victorious in the Under-13 boys and girls high jump, where she produced a best of 1.50m. Brannigan also claimed a win in the under-13 girls 800m, where she clocked 2:41.1.
Fellow Swansea Harrier Katriel Udoh also enjoyed a hugely impressive day with three individual successes.
In the under-15 girls 75m hurdles, Udoh tied for first place with club mate Rutendo Chasweka in 12.5.
The 13-year-old went on to win the under-15 girls 100m in 13.0, just ahead of Chasweka, and the 200m in 27.1.
SOUTH WALES JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT OPEN 2 – HEREFORD, MAY 18
There was a strong turn-out for the South Wales Junior Development open fixture in Hereford where 270 athletes competed across a packed schedule.
Among the stand out individual performances was Joshua Thomas (Cardiff Archers) winning the under-15 boys 200m in 24.1 just ahead of Jacob Barnes (Cardiff Athletics), who also had a productive day.
Barnes won his under-15 boys 100m heat in a PB of 11.54, ahead of Thomas, who also gained a PB of 11.60.
In the girls events, Olympia Murray (Cardiff Archers) produced an impressive PB of 12.8 to win her under-15 girls 100m heat.
Olivia Thomas (Cardiff Archers) had a day to remember as she won her under-13 girls 200m race in 27.60, her 100m heat in 13.7 and her long jump pool with a best of 4.05m.
CHRISTLETON 5K - CHESTER, MAY 16
On Friday evening, NDP athlete Heather Watson (Deeside AAC) came 5th in the Christleton 5km, setting a new PB of 17.15 (chip time 17.10). Eden O'Dea (Deeside AAC) finished 6th in 17:24.
