‘TWAS THE MEET BEFORE CHRISTMAS – WINSTON-SALEM, USA, DECEMBER 12
Ellen Mary Kearney (Warriors/Milligan College) set a new mile personal best of 4:48.04 in the USA on Friday.
NORTH WALES CHRISTMAS INDOOR – DEESIDE, DECEMBER 13
More than 100 athletes gathered at the Deeside Indoor Athletics Centre for the North Wales Christmas Indoor meeting.
The 60m sprints attracted by far the biggest entry of the day with more than 70 athletes taking to the start line of 16 races.
The fastest time of the day was posted by Cai Lewis Jones (Menai Track and Field) with 7.14, closely followed by Connor Rhys Fallorina Dean (Colwyn Bay) with 7.15.
The fastest female time of the day came from under-17 athlete Mia Johnson (West Cheshire AC) in 7.99, while Olivia Scrimshaw (Deeside AAC) was the next fastest with 8.09.
In the field events, there were two wins for under-15 athlete Oliver Surman (Deeside AC), who won the pole vault with a best of 2.90m and the high jump with 1.67m.
EUROPEAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – LAGOA, PORTUGAL, DECEMBER 14
Cari Hughes (Cardiff Athletics) and Ava Lloyd (Wigan and District) won team medals for Great Britain at the European Cross Country Championships in Portugal.
Hughes, who has enjoyed an outstanding year which included setting a new Welsh 3,000m steeplechase record on her debut over the distance, finished 29th in 26:21 in the senior women’s race which helped the GB team to an excellent silver medal.
Team-mate Megan Keith (Inverness/Edinburgh University) led the way with an individual silver medal.
Lloyd was part of an excellent GB team performance in the mixed relay race which saw them land a bronze medal.
Running the opening leg of 1300m, Lloyd put the team in a good position to eventually finish third behind champions Italy.
GB also won team gold in the under-20 women’s race where Innes FitzGerald (Exeter) won her third individual gold medal.
TELFORD 10K – DECEMBER 14
Welsh male and female teams, along with a number of individual athletes, took part in the Telford 10K on Sunday.
Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC), who made a winning return to the roads after nine years at Leeds last month, stood on top of the podium once again in the women’s race.
The Commonwealth Games medallist led the field home in a new personal best of 31:31 – just five seconds outside of Charlotte Arter’s Welsh record.
The highest Welsh finisher in the men’s race was Daf Jones (Swansea Harriers) who also recorded a new PB of 29:03 to finish eighth.
The Welsh men’s team placings were: 13th Adam Barber (Harborough/Leeds Beckett University) 29:12 (PB); 26th Jonathan Butler (Swansea Harriers) 29:41 (PB); 43rd Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) 30:04; 51st Lloyd Shepherd Brown (Cardiff Athletics) 30:11 (road PB). The Welsh men finished second in the inter area team competition.
The Welsh women’s team results were: 17th Rhiannon Paton (Westbury) 34:21 (PB); 28th Eden O’Dea (Deeside AAC) 34:59; Donna Morris (Builth Wells) 35:16 (PB); 46th Leonora Lynn (Belgrave) 36:20 (road PB). The Welsh women finished in third place in the team event.
CARDIFF MET CHRISTMAS CLASSIC GRAND PRIX – DECEMBER 14
Almost 400 athletes competed at the annual Cardiff Met Christmas Classic Grand Prix at the National Indoor Athletics Centre.
The meeting incorporated the Welsh Senior, Under-20 and Under-17 3,000m championships.
The senior Welsh women’s 3,000m title was won by Emma Powell (Western Tempo), who claimed the title in 9:33.36 ahead of Poppy Elton (Worcester AC) in 9:37.01 and Darcie Bass (Swansea Harriers) in 9:43.13.
The women’s under-20 title was won by Rebecca Harries (Cardiff Athletics) in 9:53.85. Leah Rhodes (Newport Harriers) was second in 10:13.64 – a time which also brought her the Under-17 title. Julia Teka (Cardiff Athletics) was third in 10:15.65.
Nansi Griffiths (Carmarthen Harriers) was second in the under-17 category in 10:23.50.
The senior men’s title was won by James Henneghan (Pontypridd Roadents), who broke the tape in 8:15.92. Craig Williams (Newport Harriers) posted the next fastest time of 8:25.30 ahead of Ethan Esteban-Protheroe (Cardiff Athletics) in 8:30.53.
Samuel Boyce (Cardiff Athletics) claimed the under-20 men’s title thanks to his time of 8:56.75 with club-mate Rhys Pladdy earning silver with 8:59.98. Taylor Greig (Bridgend Athletics) was third in 9:21.16.
National Development Programme athlete Tom Garrod (Newport Harriers) won under-17 gold crossing the line in 9:02.76. Ioan Vale (Aberdare Valley) was second with 9:34.62. Jake Crock (Cardiff Athletics) was third with 9:39.65.
Other stand-out performances saw Louis Starr (Rugby and Northampton AC), who ran 1:19.51, and NDP athlete Jack Organ (Brecon AC), who clocked 1:19.56, both surpass Organ’s Welsh Under-20 600m record of 1:21.11 set two years ago.
The women’s 600m saw Keira Devereux (North Somerset) win in a new PB of 1:34.81, ahead of Freya Tubb (North Devon) in 1:35.21 and Chloe Biggs (Newport Harriers) in 1:35.45.
NDP sprinter Darcy Coslett (Llanelli AAC) was also in record breaking form in the 300m where she set a new meeting record of 39.74. Another NDP sprinter Ava-Lexi Placide (Cardiff Athletics) ran 7.82 in the 60m.
In the field events, NDP thrower Lachlan Robbie (Cardiff Archers) won the men’s shot put with a best of 13.70m.
BRACKLA HARRIERS CHRISTMAS PUDDING RACE – DECEMBER 14
The challenging multi-terrain Brackla Harriers Christmas Pudding Race took place at Merthyr Mawr on Sunday morning.
The 10k course features the infamous Big Dipper – Europe’s second highest sand dune and a mulled wine and mince pie stop half way round.
This year’s men’s race was won by James Hunt (Bridgend AC), who completed the course in 40:01, ahead of Adam Bowden (Cowbridge Moovers) in 41:33 and Ed Slaughter (Porthcawl Runners) in 42:31.
Kathryn James (Vegan Runners UK) won the women’s race, clocking 50:17. Second place went to Meinir James in 50:57, with Naomi Nicholas third in 51:34.
CARDIFF FESTIVE 10K – DECEMBER 14
The men’s race was won by Oliver Price (Pontypridd Roadents) who crossed the line in 33:00, ahead of club-mate Ben Hughes in 33:09 and Tom Flitcroft (Les Croupiers) in 33:28.
The women’s winner was Millie Gold (Swansea Harriers) who clocked 36:53. Antoinette Rose (Lliswerry Runners) was second in 37:31 and Emma Wookey (Lliswerry Runners) was third in 38:13.
