JOHN H COLLINS GWENT CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE – FIXTURE 1 – MARGAM PARK, OCTOBER 12

Dafydd Jones (Swansea Harriers) gained a significant win in the first fixture of the Gwent Cross Country League on Saturday.

Jones, who represented Great Britain at last year’s European Cross Country Championships in Turkey, pipped nine-time Welsh Cross Country Champion and Swansea Harriers team mate Dewi Griffiths to victory in the senior men’s race.

On a dry 8.8k Margam Park course, Jones claimed victory in 28:32 ahead of fellow Great Britain international and Wales Commonwealth Games competitor Griffiths, who crossed the line in 29:09. Felix McGrath (Bristol and West Athletic Club) was third in 29:09.

Jones’ performance also brought him victory in the men’s under-23 category, where Isaac Arnott (Cardiff Metropolitan University) was second in 31:23, just ahead of Morgan James (Swansea Harriers) in 31:26.

In the teams standings, Pontypridd Roadents emerged top of the pile in the senior men with 2241 points, ahead of Swansea Harriers (2238) and Bristol and West Running Club (2228).

The senior women’s race, contested over 6.2k, was won by Ellie Wallace (North Somerset) in 23:08, ahead of Freya Bradley (Westbury Harriers) in 23:25 and Sian Duval (University of the West of England) in 24:12.

The first Welsh finisher was Katrina Entwistle (Bristol and West Athletic Club), who clocked 24:50. Millie Gold (Swansea Harriers), who represented GB at the European Under-20 Championships in the summer, was fifth in 25:09.

Bradley, Duval and Gold also filled the podium places in the women’s under-23 race.

The senior women’s team standings see Bristol and West Athletic Club and Parc Bryn Bach Running Club joint first on 1719 points. Les Croupiers were third on 1693.

The day’s races featured hundreds of athletes from across south Wales and the west of England, competing in categories from novice boys and girls up to male and female Masters 65.

Among the masters age group winners were Phil Matthews (Parc Bryn Bach Running Club), who won the over-35 men’s race in 30:20 and Donna Morris (Builth and District) who crossed the line in 25:30 to claim the fastest women’s crown. Matthews was also the fastest in the men’s over 45 category.


RAS DAU GOPA ABERYSTWYTH TWIN PEAKS – OCTOBER 12

The race is held over an 11.7k course with 237 metres of climbing up the twin peaks of Pen Dinas and Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth.

This year’s men’s senior race, which started and finished at the bandstand on Aberystwyth’s promenade, was won by Isaac Mignon Onfray (Aberystwyth University Harriers) in 46:32. Second was Rhodri Williams (Sarn Helen) in 48:25 with Wyn Thomas (Sarn Helen) third in 48:55.

The first female finisher was Ffion Morgan (CDF) who completed the course in 53:38, ahead of Becky Atkinson (Sarn Helen) in 55:02. Astra Holder (Aberystwyth University Harriers) was third in 57:27.
