BELFAST IRISH MILERS MEET 2025 – MAY 10

Justin Davies (Team Bath) followed up his outstanding indoor season by opening his outdoor campaign with a brilliant new Welsh 800m record on the Mary Peters Track in Belfast on Saturday.

The reigning UK indoor champion took over a second off his own personal best and more than half a second off Gareth Warburton’s existing Welsh senior record of 1:44.98, set in Oslo back in June of 2012.

Competing in the international men’s 800m in Northern Ireland, Davies followed the pacemaker during the early stages before hitting the front in with 350m to go.

The 22-year-old Welsh Athletics Transition Programme athlete looked super strong as he led the way to the tape, stopping the clock in a blistering 1:44.35.

Not only was the time a new Welsh record, but also a qualifying standard for the European Under-23 Championships in Norway this July and the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September. It is also a qualifying time for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Davies wasn’t the only Welsh athlete in fine form across the Irish Sea on Saturday. Competing at the same event, Tess McHugh (Sale Harriers Manchester) ran a new PB of 52.62 as she won the international women’s 400m in fine style by almost half a second.

In third place was Isabelle Boffey (Enfield and Harringey) who warmed up ahead of earning her first Welsh vest at next weekend’s Loughborough International by running 53.59.
