WINTER LONG THROWS UK SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – LOUGHBOROUGH, MARCH 1 AND 2
A number of Welsh athletes excelled at the Winter Long Throw Championships in Loughborough over the weekend.
Leading the way was Michael Jenkins (Pembrokeshire Harriers) who set a new 2kg personal best of 54.27m on his way to winning the senior men’s discus.
There were two third place finishes for Welsh Athletics National Development Programme athletes Lucy Harris (Swansea Harriers) and Owen Garrett (Yate and District AC).
Harris recorded a best throw of 38.53m, while Garrett celebrated a new personal best of 48.49m to earn his third place.
In the men’s under-20 javelin, Lewie Jones (Swansea Harriers) was third with a best of 55.64m, while the hammer saw Amelia Fettis (Loughborough Students) claim a fourth place finish with a throw of 54.11m.
On Sunday, Amelia Mitchell (Neath Harriers) placed fourth in the under-18 hammer with a best of 47.50m.
RHAYADER ROUND THE LAKES 30K AND 10K – MARCH 1
The 30km route took runners out of town and around the beautiful Elan Valley dams while the 10km race went up to the Elan Valley and back.
The first Round The Lakes Race, then 20 Miles was in 1984, the race has grown in popularity since. A 5 mile race was introduced shortly afterwards and replaced by a 10km in 2021.
On Saturday, the men’s 30K honours went to CDF Runners clubmates Adam Whittaker and Neale Denton.
Whittaker claimed the win in 1:49.45, while Denton followed him home in 1:55.06 ahead of Eric Apperley (Builth and District Running Club) in 1:55.34.
There was further success for CDF Runners in the women’s race where Ceri Merwood was victorious in 2:01.28. Second place went to Jo Lloyd Davies in 2:12.09, just ahead of Josie Wheeler (Pontypridd Roadents AC) in 2:12.13.
The men’s 10k was won by V50 runner Lee Price (Builth and District Runners) in 38:50 ahead of Xander Brandon-Higgs (Maldwyn Harriers) in 39:18 and James Jones (Builth and District Harriers) in 40:31.
Hannah Thomas (Maldwyn Harriers) won the women’s 10k in 41:36. V55 runner Cherry Fowler (Chepstow Harriers) was second in 43:47 with Caryl Wyn Davies (Aberystwyth AC) third in 44:36.
ST JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL CITY OF NEWPORT HALF MARATHON – MARCH 2
More than 2,500 runners took part in the St Joseph’s Hospital City of Newport Half Marathon on Sunday.
The men’s race was won by Jamie Williamson (Springburn Harriers) in 1:07.18, who finished comfortably ahead of George Collinson (Les Croupiers) in 1:12.08 and Simon Lewis (Pontypridd Roadents) in 1:13.06.
Donna Morris (Builth and District Running Club) won the women’s race in 1:20.24. Nynke Kuiper (Les Croupiers) was second in 1:22.15 and Madison Shaddick (Vegan Runners) third in 1:23.15.
JONES O GYMRU ANGLESEY HALF MARATHON AND 10K – MARCH 2
Dubbed the most beautiful half marathon in North Wales, the event took in breathtaking views of Eryri National Park and the Menai Straits.
The men’s half marathon was won by Jonathan Morris (Wolverhampton and Bilston) in 1:10.32. James Brown (Prestwich AC) was second in 1:14.06 with David Morris (City of Stoke) third in 1:14.59.
The women’s winner was Emma Alofs (Cybi Striders) who claimed victory in 1:26.16 ahead of Jenna Seddon in 1:30.04 and Carla Green (North Wales Road Runners) in 1:31.52.
In the 10k race, Owen Roberts (Meirionnydd Running Club) emerged victorious in 31:33. Clubmate Ben Harding was second in 32:56 with Stephen Campbell (Liverpool Harriers AC) third in 33:21.
Katie Reynolds won the women’s race in 39:16 ahead of Cara Bird (Cybi Striders) in 42:58 and Mari Griffiths in 45:39.
JOHN H COLLINS GWENT LEAGUE MATCH 5 – BRECON, MARCH 2
The final fixture of the John H Collins Gwent League was held at Penlan Playing Fields on Sunday.
The senior men’s race was won by Felix McGrath (Bristol and West Athletic Club) in 24:34 ahead of Phil Matthews (Parc Bryn Bach) in 25:09.
The senior women’s race was won by Gemma Tutton (Swansea Harriers) in 22:56. Second was Elinor Mattey (Parc Bryn Bach Running Club) in 22:11.

BRITISH 20KM RACE WALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS AND MURRAY LAMBDEN OPEN – ISLE OF MAN, MARCH 2
Under-13 athlete Spencer Jones (Wrexham) won the 2KM race in 10:43.
