Virtual Road Relays - Get Competitive

15/12/2020 00:00, I Mewn Blog / Club Notice Board / Road /

At a time when events are not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions in Wales, Welsh Athletics are running a free-to-enter virtual road relay competition to give runners and clubs from across Wales the chance to compete against each other (virtually!)  The finalists from the Wales-wide round will get an opportunity to represent Wales in a virtual battle for the title against teams from the other Home Countries.

This Virtual Road Relays Competition takes place in Wales across three rounds:

  • Round 1 – Regional Relays (currently ongoing – either contact your region or visit the Welsh Athletics website for individual event details & dates)
  • Round 2 – Welsh Virtual Road Relays (Friday 12th February 2021 – Monday 15th February 2021)
  • Round 3 – International Round (19th March 2021 – 22nd March 2021)

Round 2 is open to all Welsh Athletics registered runners aged 15+ and is across a 5-mile race distance and an entry link will be available in January.  Mixed teams of eight (4 x men / 4 x women) are required to complete legs of five miles per runner. Clubs can have an uncapped number of their runners competing with their overall result calculated by the times of their fastest four men and four women. (NB. Any single-gender clubs wanting to enter can pair with other clubs to form a mixed team.  Contact competitions@welshathletics.org to set up a mixed team).

The competition is hosted via the OpenTrack virtual running platform – with runners able to select their club, complete their legs individually (adhering to Welsh Government and Welsh Athletics guidelines, social distancing and competition rules) and then upload their run data as evidence of their run.

The overall winner of Round 2 will gain the change to compete virtually against the other Home Countries. For more details on the format of this challenge visit the Welsh Athletics website now
