Welsh Athletics National Talent Development Coordinator for throws Ryan Spencer-Jones has concluded his time at Welsh Athletics to start a new role supporting throwers that are part of the World Class Performance Programme for UK Athletics.

Ryan, who has worked at Welsh Athletics since 2012, was the throws lead at the 2021 and 2024 Paralympic Games and competed previously at two Commonwealth Games for Wales.

To ensure continuity in support for Welsh athletes, Ryan has agreed to undertake some consultancy work for Welsh Athletics until mid 2027, while current Para Athletics Lead, Neil Taylor will take on the wider responsibility for supporting the throwing events across Wales.

Welsh Athletics CEO, James Williams commented on the change:

I am delighted that Ryan will have the chance to further develop his skills in his new role with UK Athletics. Seeing staff develop and progress is an important part of our staff development work. I know first hand how passionate Ryan is about developing throws across the UK, and I have no doubt he will be a big success in his new role.

I am also delighted that we will continue to have Ryan working with the Welsh athletes through until 2027, and I hope that Welsh Athletes and coaches can continue to benefit from his knowledge, passion and expertise during this period.

Ryan has been with the organisation for a long time, having started as a regional development officer, before moving into the performance programme in the lead up to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Ryan started his role officially with UK Athletics on the 1 February 2025.
