Team Wales has announced today that the 8th Commonwealth Youth Games will take place in Malta in late 2027.
The Games, which bring together athletes aged 14–18 from across the Commonwealth, will see around 1,150 young competitors from 74 nations and territories compete in eight sports. The programme includes Athletics and Para Athletics, Netball, Squash, Swimming and Para Swimming, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and for the first time at a CYG, Sailing and Water Polo.
The announcement reflects a continued commitment from the Commonwealth Games Federation to promote opportunity, inclusion, and youth engagement across all member nations – particularly in small and island states. Malta’s dual-island concept (similar to the Trinbago Games two years ago), will showcase world-class venues across Malta and Gozo, supported by athlete villages located in hotels on both islands.
This edition of the Games will feature the largest Para sport programme in CYG history, with Para Swimming added for the first time – a move that builds on the successful inclusion of Para Athletics in Trinidad and Tobago 2023.
The last Commonwealth Youth Games took place in Trinbago in 2023, and a team of 11 athletes represented Athletics.
History was made on the first day of athletics competition in Trinidad as Tomi Roberts-Jones (DSW Para Academy) took gold in the men’s T38 100m to win Wales’ first para gold medal in Commonwealth Youth Games history.
In the first of the throw's events for Team Wales, Mia Lloyd (DSW Para Academy / Carmarthen & District Harriers) also made history to become the first para-athlete to represent Team Wales at a Commonwealth Youth Games. Lloyd finished fourth in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus final, registering a best distance of 14.83m.
On the final day of competition in Trinidad, William Bishop (DSW Para Academy) claimed bronze in the men’s T38 long jump to become the first Welsh para-athlete to win a field medal at a Commonwealth Youth Games. Bishop opened his competition with a jump of 4.28m and in the third round the athlete jumped a personal best distance of 4.44m to secure his spot in the bronze medal position.
Overall, Athletics enjoyed a brilliant Games in Trinbago returning with two medals and plenty of action.
We look forward to another brilliant Games in Malta in late 2027.
