The late Ivor Arnold – Clive Williams remembers a great servant to athletics in Wales who died recently.

The Welsh athletics community will be sad to learn of the death of leading official Ivor Arnold at the age of 91. He died in Barry on April 2nd. He was one of Britain’s leading starters and was an almost ever present at major Welsh events resplendent in his red starters blazer.

He will be remembered for his long and dedicated service to our sport. He was a grade 1 international starter, a veteran of the Korean War and a former schoolteacher. In 1982, Ivor was presented with the Welsh Athletics Meritorious Award for his exceptional contribution to athletics in Wales.

I have many pleasant memories of Ivor, despite his many comments about my commentaries on the public address at athletics events. He used to say that I was aiding the leading athletes by announcing where the athletes in the chasing pack were. But I had much respect for his views and dedication to our sport.

We send our condolences to his wife Rena and family
