Hot weather advice for clubs

23/06/2026 00:00, I Mewn Blog / Club Notice Board /

With weather warnings in place across Wales we wanted to share some advice if you are planning on continuing with sessions in the coming days.

It goes without saying that the most important thing is the safety of those involved - participants, coaches and volunteers. The decision on how you approach sessions remains completely yours - you all have different environments to work with so rather than a directive to cancel or continue please use this as guidance and information to help you make the right decision for your club and community.

If your session/s go ahead...

Think about:

·        Prioritise hydration - with hydration breaks all the rage, remind participants to bring plenty of water and if it is possible for you to do so consider providing additional water yourselves

·        Modify activities - lower the intensity and increase the breaks

·        Find shade - if you're outdoors seek out covered areas where possible or consider an indoor setting if viable

·        Caps and cream - ask participants to cover up with appropriate clothing, sun hats and suncream

·        Warning signs - this link to an NHS article, while focussed on children, gives some handy tips to recognise those who might really be struggling. A more general article can be found here.

·        Shorten the session - don't be afraid to shorten sessions as well as the activities within them as well

However you adapt, make sure that you have fully risk-assessed the situation and don't be afraid to amend your approach if the conditions change.

If you do cancel a session...

Think about:

·        Cancel as early as possible to give plenty of warning

·        Consider formally documenting the decision to help with transparency and future considerations

·        Could a social activity provide a community-focussed alternative?

Be safe in the coming days and above all else, look after each other.
