The track takes centre stage for Welsh fans on Thursday with four athletes poised under the starter’s pistol.
First up, Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) and Ava Lloyd (Wigan and District Harriers and AC) will tackle the opening round of the women’s mile.
Courtney-Bryant has competed at two previous Commonwealth Games – winning a bronze medal on the Gold Coast in 2018.
The Welsh 1500m, 5,000m and mile record holder is joint athletics team captain alongside thrower Harrison Walsh.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Lloyd will be competing at her first Commonwealth Games having also represented Great Britain at the European Under-23 Championships and the World Under-20 Championships where she placed fifth in the 1500m.
Courtney-Bryant is due to go in heat one alongside the popular local favourite Jemma Reekie and Jess Hull, the Paris Olympics 1500m silver medallist from Australia.
Lloyd has been drawn in heat two. Amongst others, she is pitted against another Scot, Sarah Calvert and England’s Katie Snowden.
The heats are due to start at 12:05pm.
At 12:45, Charlotte Henrich (Invicta East Kent) will appear in the 400m semi-finals, having won her first round heat in fine style on Tuesday.
The Welsh record holder has been drawn in lane five in the third semi-final. Her main threats appear to come from Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo, Jamaican Leah Anderson and Marlie Viljoen, of South Africa.
There’s more Welsh semi-final action at 20:45 when Justin Davies (Team Bath) will be bidding for a place in the 800m final.
Davies, who is also the Welsh record holder, looked in fine form when he finished second in his heat on Tuesday morning.
In the semis, he will be running in the first semi-final where there will be stern competition from amongst others England’s Ben Pattison and Australian Peter Bol, who won 800m silver in Birmingham.
