Cardiff Half Marathon Preview

20/03/2022 00:00, I Mewn Blog / Road /

With the Commonwealth Games approaching, the race on Sunday 27 March will feature the strongest domestic field ever assembled for a Cardiff Half Marathon including the most competitive ever wheelchair racing field.

Welsh Marathon Record Holder Natasha Cockram (Micky Morris Racing Team) will face Wales’ Bronwen Owen (Leeds City) who will be making her debut for Half Marathon, whilst Olivia Tsim (Pontypridd) and Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach) make up the rest of the Welsh Team.

I love coming back and racing on home soil. I last did the Cardiff Half in 2017 and the atmosphere was amazing. The route takes you past all the brilliant things we all love about Cardiff. I’ve already achieved the standard for Commonwealth Games but this weekend will be a good benchmark for me to see where I am at.

The men’s race will feature several of the top British athletes including half marathon debutants; English National Cross Country Champion Mahamed Mahamed and his brother Zakariya who won the Northern Ireland International Cross Country recently. Jack Gray, Derek Hawkins, Jamie Crowe, Jonathan Glen, Sean Chalmers, Joshua Grace and Lucian Allison are the fastest of the British athletes on paper.

The Welsh mens team will be made up of Paul Graham (Pontypridd), James Hunt (Cardiff), Matthew Edwards (Cardiff) and Michael Kallenberg (cardiff).

Moroccan athlete Abdessamad El Yaagoubi will also be in action.

The event will host the Welsh Championships for the distance and will also feature an International between Wales and Scotland, with the Scotish men's team led by Hawkins.

Bret Crossley is the fastest in the wheelchair field with a P.B. of 48:12 and Mel Nicholls heading the women’s field with a best of 53:39.

Two Cardiff Half events are set to be hosted in 2022, with the race returning to its regular autumn slot on Sunday 2 October. The October event will retain World Athletics Elite Road Race Label status with a strong international elite field.
