Six athletes selected for Commonwealth Youth Games

Welsh Athletics is pleased to announce that six Welsh athletes will be heading to the Bahamas to compete at the Commonwealth Youth Games this July*.

Four athletes achieved the standard set for nomination; Discus thrower James Tomlinson (Coach: Paul Jenson / Club: Pembrokeshire Harriers), who smashed the 54.00m standard with a throw of 62.48m earlier this season; 3000m runner Oliver Barbaresi (Coach: Andy Walling / Club: Menai Track and Field), who went 8.30 in his only 3000m outdoor race so far this year - comfortably within the 8.35 required for nomination; Bethany Moule (Coach: John Davies / Club: Neath Harriers), who is currently ranked 2nd in the UK as an U17 in the javelin; and shot putter, Sarah Omoregie (Coach: Gareth Lease / Club: Cardiff AAC), who threw 15.83m during the indoor season.  All four of those athletes have been selected as part of the Team Wales.

Welsh Athletics is also delighted that the Commonwealth Games Wales selection panel chose a further two Welsh athletes; Lauren Evans (Coach: Nigel Lewis / Club: Cardiff AAC) in the 100m hurdles and Naomi Reid (Coach: Phil Banning / Club: Cardiff AAC) in the 800m, to be part of the 39-strong Team Wales contingent.

Head of Coaching and Performance, Scott Simpson, had this to say;

“We are, or course, delighted that Team Wales have chosen to select six of our best U18 athletes to represent the nation at the Commonwealth Youth Games.  It will be a great honour for those athletes to wear the Welsh vest on the international stage at a multi-sport Games and I’ve no doubt that it will provide each of them with a great experience in their continued progression towards senior success in years to come.  It is a tremendous achievement for those athletes to have earned this selection and they should all be very proud of their efforts thus far.  We wish them well in their preparations over the coming weeks and look forward to seeing them perform at the Games later this summer.”

The athletes will be supported at the Games by Emma Wiltshire (Team Manager) and Adrian Palmer (Team Coach).

The Commonwealth Youth Games will be held from the 19-23 July 2017.  Team Wales is made up of athletes from across 6 sports – the full team can be found here: Team Wales
